Andover tore through its competition this weekend as the girls’ and boys’ teams both placed first in a tri-meet at Taft. The girls’ team won twelve of the seventeen events, powering the team to a 95-55-31 victory over Taft and Deerfield respectively. Alexis Walker placed first in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Cayla Hatton ’12 also captured a double win in the 800 meter and the 1500 meter events. Allison Morrison ’12 stood out as the star of the meet as she won 3 individual events: the 400 meter, the long jump, and the high jump. Additionally, Andover captured victories in 2 of the three relays, the 4×100 and the 4×400 meters. The boys’ team performed equally well, winning ten of the seventeen events and outscoring Deerfield and Taft 79-55-43 respectively. Matt Higgins ’10 opened the meet on a high note by out-sprinting his competition to capture a victory in the 100 meter dash. Phil Hofer ’10 continued Higgins’ success by winning the 800 and the 1500 meter distance events. “The Deerfield/Taft meet is on the early season schedule because it gives us an opportunity to test ourselves without some of the stiffer competition we see later in the season from teams like Loomis and Exeter,” said Hofer. “The expectation was that we would go out there and win the 1500m and the 800m, both of which we ended up sweeping on the boys side. As a whole, the distance team had a great showing,” he continued. The distance runners were just a few who of the many Andover athletes who performed well on Saturday. Malcom Mason-Rodriquez ’11 placed first in all three of his field events: the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. Additionally, Mike Bernieri won the discus and Bobby Vardaro ’10 won the shot put. The 12 wins on the girls side and ten for the boys led Andover to a sweep of Taft and Deerfield. The team will take on Exeter, St. Paul’s and Milton this Saturday in a quad-meet.
