Girls Track- The Andover Girls distance runners came through on Saturday to sweep the 1500m, scoring nine points for the team and contributing to Andover’s big win against Taft and Deerfield. The final score was Phillips Academy 82, Taft School 62, and Deerfield Academy 28. Lead by Berol Dewdney ’09 with a phenomenal time of 4:58, Andover took places 1-5 in the 1500m; Anna Fang ’10 ran impressively to finish in second place, followed by Catherine Coppinger ’09, Tavie Abell ’10 and Cora Lewis ’09. Dewdney also won the 3000m in 10:49, followed by Georgina Norton ’09 with a time of 11:25 and Anna Fang in third. Rounding out the distance events, Anne Elder ’09 and Aubrey Zimmerling ’09 stuck together to take second and third in the 800m, with times of 2:34 and 2:35, respectively. Andover was also successful in the sprints and hurdles. Despite a disappointing start to the meet with a DQ in the 4×100, Simone Hill ’08 bounced back to win the 100m in 13.3, with Katherine Matsumoto ’07 close behind in second with 13.5. The pair took second and third, respectively, in the 200m. Of their success in the sprints, Matsumoto said, “The meet was a great start for the regular season. It was really great for Simone and I to do so well in the 100 and 200. After a long bus ride and tough end to the 4×100, we [were worried] because Taft didn’t provide enough starting blocks for Andover’s sprinters. Starting without blocks was something unusual, but after the first few slow steps out, catching up and passing the other teams for a 1-2 finish was a great feeling.” In the hurdles, Lowers Annie McDonough and Sophie Shimer worked together to earn valuable points for Andover. McDonough placed second in the 110m hurdles in 19.3 seconds, followed by Shimer in fourth with a time of 20.6. Then, the girls switched it up in the 300m as Shimer finished second and McDonough third. Andover finally received important wins in the field events thanks to team veterans. Colleen Thurman ’07 won the long jump by an inch over her opponent with a great jump of 16’7”. In the throws, Hailee Minor ’08 won both her events—the shot put with a throw of 29’5”, and the discus with 90’5”. Sadiqa Farrow ’09 took second in the shot put, followed by Meghan McCafferty ’10. McCafferty also placed third in the discus. Hopefully the team can carry this success on to next week’s meet against Exeter. boys Track- With the help of Anthony Ambrosi ’07, who threw first in the javelin with 178’11’’, the Andover boys defeated Taft and Deerfield on Saturday. Throwers made a huge contribution to the win, with Joe O’Hern ’07 throwing the discus 131’7’’ inches to win first. O’Hern also placed second in the shot with a throw of 42’6’’. Martin Serna ’07 and Michael Bernieri ’10 place third and fourth with throws of 39’8 3?4’’ and 35’11 1?2’’ respectively. Frank Pinto ’08 placed third in the Long Jump with 18’11 3?4’’ then followed up with a fifth place finish in the Triple Jump, reaching 38’3’’. Also contributing to the win over Taft was sprinter Helal Syed ’07, who won the 200m dash in 24.4 seconds and placed second in the 100 meters in 11.9 seconds. Many distance runners also fared well. Addison Godine ’07 ran two very smart races to win both the 800m and the 1500m races, with times of 2:00.3 and 4:20.5, respectively. Eli Howe ’09 came across the 1500m finish line in 4:21.4, placing second. Howe also won the 3000m with a time of 9:40, with Phil Hofer ’10 right behind in with a time of 10:19. The winner of the boys meet was decided by the 4×400 meter relay at the end of the meet. The team, consisting of Alex Hugon ’07, Peter McCarthy ’07, Alex Clifford ’07 and Chase Potter ’09 was barely in the lead when an opponent from the Taft team dropped the baton, putting them even farther behind. A runner from Deerfield started to advance on Andover’s lead during the last leg, but anchor Potter kicked hard and outworked his opponent, securing first place and winning Andover the meet.
