Andover Flys By Taft and Deerfield

Led by first place finishes from co-captain Malcolm Mason-Rodriguez ’11 in the 100M, long jump, triple jump, the boys track team scored 76 points to beat Taft and Deerfield on Saturday. Taft and Deerfield scored 38 and 67 points respectively. On Wednesday, the boys team suffered a close loss in the meet against Exeter, Milton, and St. Paul’s school.

As for the girls, a relay of Shannon Adams ’12, Emily Fang ’13, Becca Wagman ’13, and Jasmine Edison ’11 took first in the 4x400M with a time of 4:23 to contribute to the 96 points that the team scored to win the meet. Deerfield finished with 52 points while Taft scored 27. The girls won a decisive victory in meet against Exeter, Milton, and St. Paul’s school, scoring 117 points to beat Exeter’s 108 points.

In the meet against Taft and Deerfield, the boys had seventeen athletes who scored in twenty-eight events. Brandon Wright ’11, Malcolm Mason-Rodriguez ’11, Aidan Mattrick ’13, and Flemming placed first in the boy’s 4x100M relay with a time of 46.01 seconds. Flemming also took second in the long jump with an 18 foot 7 inch jump.

Jack Ward ’13 won both the shot put and the discus throw, while Renat Zalov ’11 finished first in the 3000M with a time of 9:31. With a first place score of 5 feet 10 inches, Earl Graves ’11 won the high jump. Max Queenan ’11 and Nathan Johnson ’11 took first and second place in the Pole Vault with jumps of 10 feet 6 inches, and 10 feet respectively.

The girls finished with seventeen athletes scoring in twenty-eight events. After co-captain Aniebiet Abasi ’11 took first place in the 100 meter with a time of 13.26 seconds, Kelsey Jamieson ’12 finished first in both the 1500M and 3000M. Diana Tchadi ’14 also dominated the track, winning both hurdle events and running as a member of the winning 4×100 relay along with Abasi, Wagman, and Walker. The girls won the 4×100 relay with a time of 51.51. Kayla Rosario ’11 dominated the field events, winning both the shot put and discus throw, and placing in the javelin. A 4 foot 6 inch jump gave Shannon Adams ’12 the win in the high jump and a 5 foot 18 inch jump gave Walker the victory in the long jump. Orie Idah ’11 jumped to first place in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet 3 inches.

In the Exeter, Milton, and St. Paul’s meet, Tafarii McKenzie ’12, Shannon Adams ’12, Becca Wagman ’13, and Jasmine Edison ’11 won the 4x400M relay to lead the team to victory. Despite wins in the shot put and discus from Jack Ward ’13 and a sweep in both of these events, the boys’ suffered a tough loss in a meet against Exeter, Milton, and St. Paul’s school.

For the girls, Jamie Shenk ’12 won the Javelin with a 105 foot throw and McKenzie took first in the 400M with a time 61 seconds. Kate Bulger ’11 won the 1500M.

On the boys side, Renat Zalov ’11 won the 3000M while Earl Graves ’11 took first in the high jump with a jump of six feet, two inches. Ward contributed with his wins in the shot put and discus.

Co-captain Aniebiet Abasi ’11 said, “Our team won not because we have one awesome athlete but because we have three or four good ones in each event. That’s why Track and Field really is a team sport. Every win is a win for the team and every loss is a team loss.”
