Alexis Lefft ’16 won the Shot-Put for the third meet in a row and helped Andover Girls Indoor Track secure another win in the first quad-meet of the season. Andover raced Hyde, Governor’s and Wilbraham & Monson, prevailing with a final score of 62-48-20-0. Lefft’s throw traveled an impressive 29’09”.
“Coming into [the] meet, we had already seen both Wilbraham & Monson and Governor’s a couple of times, so in a way, it allowed us to focus more on technique and our own throws instead of what the other teams were doing,” said Lefft.
Andover thrived in many of the other field events; Franziska Trautmann ’16 claimed first place in the Pole Vault, and Sidney Holder ’18 leapt 15’6” to take second place in the Long Jump. Kinsey Yost ’15 came in third in the Long Jump with a distance of 15’5”, and Victoria Naranjo ’15 took third place in the High Jump with a height of 4’10”.
Camille Little ’16 clinched first place again in the 300-Yard Dash with a time of 41.10. Andover also snatched second and third place with Girls Captain Charlie Jarvis ’15 close behind Little and returner Caroline Shipley ’16 finished in third.
Little also finished the 50-Yard Dash in 6.46 seconds to take first place. Jarvis, nearly tied with Little, came in second with a time of 6.73.
As usual, Andover dominated the distance events. Junior Grace Rademacher ’18 snagged first place in the One-Mile with a time 5:33.82, passing many runners from Governor’s and Wilbraham & Monson. Key distance runner Anoush Shehadeh ’15 secured first place in the Two-Mile, finishing with a time of 12:50.55.
The last event of the meet was the Girls 4×400 Relay. Yost, Shipley, Holder and Deyana Marsh ’18 ran the relay and finished just behind the Governor’s relay team to take second place at 4:48.49. Andover Boys Track was a strong presence in first and second place for most events but finished in second place by a 60.5-59.5-5-4 margin.
Boys Captain John Gorton ’15 said, “However tough it can be to lose, today’s loss was the type of loss that actually bodes well for future success. We did not lose by much, and actually would have won if some of our more experienced athletes had been at full strength.”
Will Hartemink ’17 missed the meet due to an injury.
Andover had success in the Pole Vault event with Richard Ira ’16 coming in first place with a score of 8. Joel Anthony Peña ’16 came in third with a 7.06 score.
Noah Ward ’17 won the Shot-Put for the third meet in a row with a distance of 43’07”. Justin Williamson ’16 took second place. Williamson’s throw was 38’9”.
Gorton kicked up his speed in the last lap of the One-Mile to win first place. Gorton’s time was 4:51.92, a full ten seconds ahead of the Wilbraham Monson runner who took second place. Gorton also placed first in the Two-Mile with a time of 11:26.04.
Junior Basil Alfaro ’18 claimed second place in the 1000-Yard Race in the same event with a time of 2:45.44.
Ian Jackson ’16 ran a nail-biting race in the 50-Yard Dash when he tied for first place with the Wilbraham Monson runner. Their times were 6.06 seconds. David Onabanjo ’18 came in first place again in the 300-Yard Dash with a time of 36.72.
Gorton said, “Although Exeter has one of the strongest teams in the league right now, I know my team is ready to take on the challenge. If nothing else, this team has shown that it is not afraid to take on whatever challenge stands before it.”
Only two weeks remain before Andover faces Exeter. The team will train and prepare relentlessly for its biggest meet of the season.
