A Telling Chart on Gun Violence

In President Barack Obama’s remarks following the mass shooting on Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, OR., Obama challenged the media: “Have news organizations tally up the number of Americans who’ve been killed through terrorist attacks in the last decade and the number of Americans who’ve been killed by gun violence, and post those side-by-side on your news reports,” he said.

The Phillipian recognizes its obligation to answer Obama’s challenge. The following infographic shows the results.

If anything, the difference is understated. The above data only includes firearm homicides, which made up just 33% of all firearm deaths in 2013. 63% of all firearm deaths are suicides, according to the CDC. These statistics can be found below.
