Girls Hockey Rebounds From 7-0 Loss to Choate; Kaitlyn McInnis Helps Lead to Crucial Victory

Kaitlyn McInnis ’09 penetrated the neutral zone to give herself a break away and deked the goalie. Her inspired play reflected Andover’s aggressive defense and determined offense that dominated New Hampton 3-1 last Wednesday. Looking for revenge after Saturday’s loss to Choate, Andover came out strong against New Hampton. The defense played aggressively in the offensive zone and pinched to support the forwards. Early in the second period, Andover’s perseverance paid off as Nancy Ann Little ’08 passed to Avery Stone ’10, who found the back of the net and made the score 1-0. As the opposition grew chippy, players restrained themselves from retaliating and stayed tenacious. Following McInnis’ goal, Little scored from Lindsey Wiener’s ’08 rebound to make the score 3-0, and New Hampton responded to end the game at 3-1. Last Saturday, Andover lost to Choate, the defending New England Champion team. Choate started the game roaring with motivation and capitalized on Andover’s lack of drive. Less than a minute into the game, Choate’s offense scored after winning the puck in the defensive zone. Choate took advantage of uncovered players in the in front of the net and scored three more goals in the first period, firing rebounds past Alissa Fromkin ’09. Andover players were unable to find each other within the offensive zone and generate momentum to score in the first period. In the second period, Co-Captains Stephanie Clegg ’08 and Katelyn Foley ’08 sparked the team to keep Choate off the scoreboard, and Andover found success in protecting Fromkin. Success comes when “we can build team chemistry and find that ‘click,’” said McInnis, and Andover was able to touch on that during the second period. “There were moments when we shined,” said Stone. Despite its efforts, Andover was unable to score. Choate scored again at the start of the third period on a power play, before scoring two more goals in the third. Andover hopes to increase its momentum in its game against St. Paul’s this Saturday.
