Hitting the wall at 1:42.76, Jun Oh ’12 broke the Andover-Exeter record and pool record in the 200 yard freestyle against Exeter on Wednesday, propelling Andover to a comfortable victory in its final dual meet of the year. This victory was supplemented by Oh’s A-E record in the 500 yard freestyle, and another A-E record in the 200 yard medley relay from Conor Deveney ’11, Alex Smachlo ’11, Alex Nanda ’11, and Matt Mahoney ’11. The team also cruised to victory over Suffield last Friday to complete its 2-0 week. Oh won both of his record-breaking races after the medley relay set its record in the Exeter meet with a 1:38.34. In the 500 yard freestyle, Oh lapped several racers to finish in 4:39.89, winning by more than a full length. Jon Leung ’11 placed second behind Oh in the 200 yard freestyle. After the record-breaking 200 yard medley, the team of Oh, Deveney, Nanda and Leung won the 400 freestyle relay in impressive fashion. Andover swept Exeter in the 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke. The trio of Deveney, Derrick Choi ’12, and Faller ’14took 1-2-3 in the backstroke, while Mahoney, Peng, and Andrew Wilson ’12 completed the sweep of the breaststroke. Tommy Kramer ’11 won the diving event for the fourth time this year to increase Andover’s lead. Additionally, Nanda placed second in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, while Smachlo took fourth in the 200 freestyle and second in the 100 butterfly. Leung hit the wall third in the 100 freestyle. Smachlo was pleased with the team’s performance. He felt that the team “performed well under high expectations and expects great times from everyone on the team, including the newcomers and underclassmen.” He also expressed the senior perspective on the meet, noting, “I am very impressed with the performance of this team all year and this has been one of the best experiences of my PA career. However, I am remorseful over the fact that this is my last dual meet in an Andover uniform.” In the Suffield meet, Ben Morris ’11 easily won the 100 yard butterfly in a 56.09 Smachlo and Joe Faller ‘14 both beat Suffield’s top middle distance swimmer, pulling out a 1-2 finish in the 200 yard freestyle. Andover dominated the sprints as Nanda and Leung easily won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Nanda won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.46, barely edging out two strong Suffield swimmers. Leung turned in his best performance of the year in the 100 yard freestyle, breaking the 49 second barrier for the first time this season with a finish in 48.92 seconds. Kramer once again won the diving event, scoring 240.20 points. In other individual events, Choi posted a best time in the 100 yard backstroke and won the event in 54.46. The breaststrokers increased Andover’s lead as co-captain Mahoney and Wilson finished 1-2 in the 100 yard backstroke. Oh led off the sweep of the 200 yard IM as he took first followed closely by Andrew Yang ’14 and Rapheal Grandeau ’11 who took second and third respectively. Andover also won two of the relays. In the first race of the day, the 200 yard medley relay, Andover’s team of Deveney, Morris, Mahoney and Nanda took first. Smachlo, Leung, Deveney and Lorenzo Conte ’12 won the final relay and race of the meet in impressive fashion. Morris was impressed by the team as a whole. He said, “As it was mid-season, we were in the middle of some very rigorous training and thus performance is generally worse. However, this was not the case for this meet, as the team actually performed very well.” Andover will spend this week preparing for the New England Championship meet, which will take place March 5th at Exeter.
