PA Extends Unbeaten Streak to 12 ; Mommsen ’09 Provides Seven Kills

Freshman Jamie Shenk ’12 starred at the service line this Wednesday, firing 12 aces out of 16 service points in Andover’s victory against Worcester Academy. Andover remained undefeated after topping Worcester Academy 3-0. During the first set, Worcester kept the score even, tying it at 7-7. However, Katy Svec ’10 served out five straight points, powering Andover to a 13-7 lead. Shenk displayed her finesse at the service line next. Her six service points brought Andover’s lead to 21-8. Andover won the set convincingly, 25-9. Thanks to Shenk’s serve, Andover snatched an early lead during the second set. Andover exhibited particularly strong defense throughout the set and cruised to a 25-12 win. Andover used the third set as an opportunity to experiment with new lineups on the floor. Once again, Worcester was limited to a mere two service points. This time, Shelby Carpenter ’12 and Caroline Gattuso ’09 dazzled at the service line, with an impressive seven and six service points, respectively. Andover secured the match with a 25-11 win. In addition to Shenk’s service record, Cristina Mommsen ’09 led the team in kills, with seven overall. Captian Isabelle Engelsted ’09 had four assists as setter, while Carpenter added four assists as setter. This past Sunday at Wilbraham-Monson Academy, Engelsted, Mommsen, Meghan McCafferty ’10 and Melissa Yan ’10 represented Phillips Academy Andover at the All Star tournament of the New England Prep School Fall Girls Volleyball Association (NEPSFGVA). Teams from all over New England were represented at the tournament. As one of the top three seeds, Andover sent four representatives. The tournament was played with two pools of three teams. Each team played the teams in its own pool. The winners went on to play in the championship round, and the second place teams went on to play a consolation game. The Andover girls were all on different teams. McCafferty and Mommsen made it to the championship round, where Mommsen’s team prevailed. McCafferty said that her experience at the tournament was “really great. Everyone had no idea who anyone else was because we were from all different teams, but we had a lot of team chemistry, and even though we didn’t have the best players in the tournament, we ended up making it to the championship round.” Engelsted, Mommsen and McCafferty were voted onto the team of 13 All-Stars of the league out of a pool of 38 teams and growing. Coach Clyfe Beckwith, who coached one of the teams at the tournament, proudly stated that “to have three PA students on the team is a big honor.” The Andover squad still remains the only undefeated team in its league. The team has an overall season record of 12-0, but this Saturday’s game against Exeter should prove to be a nail-biter.
