Golf Outing, Sponsored by Parent Fund, Raises $11,000

The Andover Parent Fund’s golf outing fundraiser brought together 64 Phillips Academy alumni, parents, faculty, and students to raise $11,000 on Tuesday. The tournament and putting contests were kicked off by a noontime gunshot and continued late into the afternoon. They were followed by a silent auction and raffle, both held during an après-golf cocktail and dinner reception. The Andover Parent Fund supports a wide array of Phillips Academy’s needs, including financial aid, faculty needs, and the athletic, music and theater departments. The auction items, donated by families and sponsors from the town of Andover, ranged from Boston Bruins and Celtics tickets to expensive sunglasses, a hotel getaway weekend, or a driver donated by Bob Grunbeck. Between donations, contests, the raffle, and auction, the event yielded $11,000 for the Andover Fund. This year’s outing was so successful that they have already booked the Andover Country Club for next year. Kevin Callery, Sean Flanagan, Bob MacGlaughlin, and Chris Prince shot sixteen under par to win the tournament. Their final score of 56 was the lowest the club’s Golf Pro has ever seen at an Andover Country Club tournament. There was a tie for second place at 61 strokes. The Pro Shop used the first hole for the tiebreaker. The second place winners were Bob Grunbeck, Paul Hollenbeck, Michael Pucci and Dana Redmond. Instructor in Music Peter Warsaw, Nicholas Koh ’08, Ron Fortino and Director of Public Information Steven Porter came in third place. The three students at the golf tournament were Andover Golf Team Captain Evan Harmeling ’07, Koh, and Kristen MacDonald ’07. MacDonald said, “It was a friendly atmosphere. When we registered in the morning, I got a bag of goodies including a polo shirt and stuff from the sponsors. Lots of pictures were taken during the day so that we could remember this great experience.” Event Co-Chairs Paul and Kelly McInnis came up with the idea for this golf outing last spring at a Parent Fund meeting in New York. The McInnis’ ran the idea by Associate Director of Annual Giving Chuck Richardson. Paul McInnis, Richardson, and Sandy Butters, Director of the Parent Fund, before creating a proposal, which they submitted to Ann Harris, Director of Class Reunion and Parent Fund Giving. Robert and Jennifer Grunbeck lead a Phillips Academy Golf Committee that will organize future golfing events. The committee now consists of Paul and Kelly McInnis, Sandy Butters, Chris Duble ’71, John Florence ’75, Chuck Richardson ’82, Raymond Stecker, 73, Stephen Weiner ’71, Warsaw, and Janet Ciummei.
