Nancy Lang to Take Over as Assistant Dean of Faculty

When Nancy Lang returns from her sabbatical this fall, she will assume her new position as Assistant Dean of Faculty. The opportunity for Lang to apply for the Assistant Dean of Faculty position arose after Susan McCaslin, current Assistant Dean of Faculty, chose to accept the Voluntary Retirement Incentive Package. Lang said, “I have tremendous respect for [McCaslin], who has been a role model for me since I joined the PA faculty.” “I am thrilled that I will be working with Lang,” said Maqubela. “She and I will very close in matters that pertain to the office.” “I have a deep respect for Maqubela and look forward to working with him. I am humbled by the wisdom, talent, and commitment of the PA faculty, and I am honored to have the opportunity to work more directly with my colleagues in this job,” Lang continued. Maqubela said that along with the Dean of Studies, the Assistant Dean of Faculty is responsible for being the voice to the community, especially regarding funding programs such as Course Development and Faculty Department grants. Lang is also responsible for stepping in for Maqubela when he is absent. Lang said the job was appealing to her because of the great work she had seen from McCaslin and Temba Maqubela, Dean of Faculty. Lang said she is also excited about overseeing the mentoring program for teaching fellows, because of its importance to the Andover community. “We gain so much from these recent college graduates, who have the enthusiasm, intelligence, fresh ideas, and a unique ability to relate to our students,” Lang said. She added, “At its best, a mentoring program is a mutually beneficial experience, for both the mentor and the teaching fellow, and I look forward to being a part of that special dynamic.” Paul Murphy, Dean of Faculty said, “Mrs. Lang and I will work well together hiring and training teaching fellows, which is the bulk of how our jobs interact… It will be fun to work on that with her.” ??Murphy had a one-on-one interview with Lang. Another part of Lang’s job is to work closely with Maqubela and assist him with his work. Lang graduated from Phillips Academy in 1983 and began teaching here in 1993. In her 16 years at PA, Lang has taught in the Math Department, coached Track and is currently the head coach of Girls’ Cross Country. Lang has served as a house counselor in Double Brick House, Paul Revere Hall and Johnson Hall. She now lives in non-dormitory housing with her husband Corbin Lang, Instructor in Math, and their three kids. She is currently on sabbatical.
