Andover Loses Early Lead to Tie K.U.A. 4-4; Rebound With 8-0 Win Over New Hampton

Andover’s Garnet Hathaway ’10 scored in the last five minutes of play, as Andover rallied from a 4-3 deficit and tied K.U.A. 4-4. Andover came out strong and struck first against a determined K.U.A. squad on their turf. Mike Donelan ’08 sent a ball across the goal line toward the K.U.A. net where Chris Wade ’08 knocked home the cross to give Andover a 1-0 lead. K.U.A. would later respond with a goal of its own. Before the half, Andover would force a corner in the K.U.A. end. Off the corner, John Twomey ’08 out-jumped his opponent and headed the ball into the net, giving Andover a 2-1 lead heading into the half. Andover came out in the second half hungry for a goal. Donelan, who was dangerous all game, came down the right side and crossed the ball into the K.U.A. 18-yard box. The ball hit a K.U.A. player, and bounced into the goal for an own goal, giving Andover what seemed to be a commanding 3-1 lead. Using its two very talented forwards, K.U.A. managed to gain back the momentum with three straight goals. However, Andover was able to respond by finally putting away a goal after countless minutes of pressure in the finally five minutes of play. Captain Zach Dixon ’08 sent a ball to Hathaway inside the 18-yard box. Hathaway fired a shot to the left side and tied the game at 4-4. Andover was able to escape with a tie, but after taking a 3-1 lead, the tie was still disappointing. Wednesday, Andover defeated New Hampton 8-0. Andover dominated New Hampton from start to finish. Early in the game, Andover forced a corner. Twomey scored on a header off the corner for his second goal of the week. Later in the half, Andover was given a free kick inside midfield. The ball was sent to Dixon inside the 18-yard box where he took a touch to score on an empty net. Later in the half, Dixon took the ball at the right end line and crossed the ball in the air. The ball hit a New Hampton player and bounced into the goal for an own goal, giving Andover a 3-0. In the second half, Dixon sent a ball down to Donelan who flew past the New Hampton defense before nailing a shot outside of the 18-yard box. Donelan’s shot found the bottom left corner just inside the post, and extended Andover’s lead to 4-0. Later in the half, Mike DiFronzo ’11 shot a half volley 25 yards from the goal and found the upper half of the net to further extend Andover’s lead. Later, Trevor Gulick-Stutz ’09 received a diagonal pass from Brian Russell ’09 at the 18-yard box where he fired a shot to the left side of the net. Matt Gorski ‘09 and William Thompson-Butler ’09 each added goals later in the half, to finish the game with a convincing 8-0 win. Andover will head into Andover-Exeter with a strong 9-3-4 record.
