The Big Screen Moves Indoors

What could have been a rare event under the stars turned into an indoor movie marathon of “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Dark,” providing entertainment to the students, faculty members and their families who gathered at the Smith Center with their pajamas and blankets.

The movie night, cosponsored by Abbot Cluster and the Student Activities Board, was originally intended to be shown outdoors but had to be moved indoors due to the rain.

Ashlie Rockwood ’14 said, “It would’ve been nice [to watch movies] outside if it didn’t rain. Last year, I didn’t get to go to any of the movie nights and I really wanted to go, so I’m happy I got to go this year.”

Rockwood continued, “I think the movie night is cool because usually there are dances on Saturdays, but sometimes people just aren’t in the mood to dance, and you just want to watch a movie and hang out.”

Free popcorn and drinks provided at the event added a more cinematic feel to the night.

“I went to both movies. I had fun hanging out with my friends and the popcorn was great,” said Drake Danner ’14.

Despite the rain that forced the event indoors, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the movie screening.

The atmosphere was very cheery, especially during “Kung Fu Panda 2,” an animated comedy.

Tasmiah Ahmad ’14 said, “I only watched “Kung Fu Panda 2” and I loved watching it with everyone in the Smith Center. I liked how all the little kids were laughing at the funny scenes in the movie.”

This event provided the community with a rare opportunity to watch movies that are not yet out on DVD. For example, “Kung Fu Panda 2” is not out on DVD or available on the internet.

Karen Morrissey of the Students Activities Office said, “An outdoor movie night is different. It’s like a drive-in movie. So you hope to get a bigger audience, like we did with this movie night. Kung Fu Panda was very popular among the faculty and their kids. I think the kids look forward to it every year and we try to do it every fall.”

The movie night was overall a great success, as it provided many students a relaxing getaway from their busy schedules .

“It was really fun to relax and hang out with friends after a really hard week,” said Mikaela Rabb ’14.
