Kontaxis ’11 Serves Up Victory in Debut at Number One

In a possible look to the future of their already prosperous season, Andover’s Boys Tennis demolished their competition, Groton and Tabor, by winning all fourteen possible matches.

After these two matches, Andover’s record stands at a stout 4-0, giving them a strong chance in their hopes of garnering a high seed for the New England Tennis Championships. Andover did not disappoint, even without the presence of co-captain Mark Adamsson ‘11 against Groton.

Coach Wilkin mixed up the lineup a little at the top, putting Michael Kontaxis ’11, in the place of Mark Adamsson, and Peter Heidrich ’11 as the team for #1 doubles. Despite starting slowly, these two seniors played admirably, taking an 8-5 decision.

Alasdair McClintic ’13 and Hunter Schlacks ’11 continued their play at #2 doubles, ousting their opponents by a 8-3 score. Two rookies on the Varsity A team, James Heaney ’14 and Alec Buck ’13, continued Andover’s winning ways.

In the singles, Co-captain Heidrich won his second straight match with ease, winning 6-4 6-1. At the two spot, fast-rising McClintic breezed by his opponent 6-1 6-2. Kontaxis won his first singles match of the year with a stellar 6-2 6-1 victory.

Heaney won his third straight double bagel (6-0 6-0) on the year at the 4th spot, while Schlacks and Buck, both won 6-3 6-0 and 6-2 6-2 respectively.

This Wednesday, Andover took their talents to Tabor Academy for their 4th straight road game.

Throughout all of the matches, Andover was not really challenged, as the Big Blue did not yield a single set. Heidrich and Adamsson set the tone early, beating an experienced pair of Tabor players at #1 doubles, 8-6.

Yet again, the team of McClintic and Schlacks worked together to win their doubles match 8-0. With a team showcasing the veteran leadership and the future of the team in Heaney, Andover had no problems winning the match 8-1.

Andover coasted through their singles matches. Adamsson, coming off a tough loss last week against Taft, stormed back with a super 6-2 6-0, showcasing his “powerful tennis,” according to Coach Greg Wilkin. At the three and four, McClintic and Kontaxis both took it to their opponents, winning 6-1 6-2 and 6-1 7-5. Andover’s 5th and 6th players were both superb, as Heaney and Schlacks also won in straight sets as both won 6-1 6-1.

Coach Wilkin was impressed with his teams overall performance so far this season. He said, “it’s nice to be undefeated going against some strong players.” In addition, he called this past Tabor match, “a good confidence builder.”

This Friday, Andover faces Nobles.
