Evagelia Toffoloni ’15 scored the winning goal in Andover Field Hockey’s game against Nobles this past Wednesday and led the team to a 2-1 victory. Andover is only the third team to beat Nobles this season.
“Both teams played a really good game, but we capitalized on the opportunities that we got,” said Nikoletta Toffoloni ’15. “Also, Ashlyn Aiello ’14 [the goalkeeper] saved the game. She played so well, making saves that I did not think were possible. We allowed all our good plays to pump us up and make us want it that much more.”
Julia Marcus ’15 scored the first goal of the game and Evagelia Toffoloni scored the second.
“What really held us was luck. Three post balls and other lucky events happened around our [net]. Winning it on the luck side kept our spirits up throughout the game and allowed us to be confident and play better,” said Aiello.
She continued, “We beat Nobles because we capitalized on our shots and made each one count. Though we did not have many shots, we made the most of our advantages and turned technique into goals.”
Andover’s game against Deerfield this past Friday ended in a tie, and even though the game went into overtime, neither team could score. The game ended with a final score of 2-2.
Andover started out the first half of the game aggressively, and Eliza Quigley ’15 scored only four minutes into the game.
Deerfield put pressure on Andover, but Andover’s defense was focused and did not allow a goal. Evagelia Toffoloni scored the second goal of the game to create a 2-0 lead in the middle of the first half.
However, with only a few minutes left in the first half, Deerfield picked up some momentum and scored.
The second half began with a score of 2-1. Eight minutes into the second half, Deerfield broke through Andover’s defense again and scored the last goal of the day, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
“It was an action packed end to end game, and all the kids on our team hung in there,” said Coach Kate Dolan. “We gave up 22 penalty corners. The kids’ effort was outstanding, even though we were short handed.”
The team hopes to add another win to its record of 6-4-3 when it faces Cushing Academy this Saturday.
