Will Winkenwerder ’10 netted a goal in double overtime against Exeter this Saturday to give Andover a 7-6 win in the final game of the season. This win allowed Andover’s record to just barely creep over the .500 mark, bringing it to 8-7 on the year. Andover dug itself into a hole at the start of the game, as the team trailed Exeter 4-1 after the first quarter of play. Andover made adjustments in the second quarter, and the defense started to lock-down, while the offense did a better job controlling possessions and protecting the ball. Andover was able to inch its way back to end the half down 4-3. After playing sloppily in the first half, Andover needed to regroup in the second half in order to win. “It was frustrating for our guys, especially our offensive players who were forced to watch Exeter execute their game plan with good precision,” said Coach Carr. The third quarter was uneventful for Andover, until a late goal by Exeter alarmed Andover as the team realized that it needed to start scoring. Known for his late game heroics, including a game-winner earlier in the season, Joe Kruy ’12 scored back to back goals in the fourth quarter to tie it up at five. Exeter responded with one goal of its own, but Andover would not go down softly. On an attempted clearing pass by Exeter late in the quarter, Spencer Macquarrie ’10 knocked the ball down and lobbed a great pass to teammate Tommy Shannon ’12 who scored the game tying goal. Shannon’s goal sent the game into overtime. “All year we had been a good fourth quarter team and played well from behind. Sometimes in lacrosse I think it is easier to play from behind late in the game—there is less pressure maybe, more urgency, and the boys responded well and played with toughness, focus and grit,” Coach Carr said. Ryan Gaiss ’11 won the faceoff to start the overtime period. Andover had a chance to score early but missed just wide of the net. Exeter also had two chances of its own, but both shots were stopped on two unbelievable saves by goalie Jay Dolan ’11. In a deadlock after one period of overtime, Andover headed into a second period of extra play. Andover got a man-up opportunity early in the period and took advantage, as Winkenwerder fired in the game- winner. “It was a great moment for Will and the entire team. It will forever go down in PA history,” Carr said. This was a fantastic way to cap off a rather disappointing season, especially for Andover’s seniors. “We knew that this was a game that would make or break our season. The fact that we won put us over .500, the fact that it was the Exeter game and that it was in double OT made this win extremely special for all of us,” Macquarrie said. On the defensive end, Trevor Braun ’10 played what Coach Carr called “his best game ever” shutting down the powerful Exeter attack. Co-Captain Luke Duprey ’10 and Clay Cleveland ’10 also played tremendous defense in the win. Both Co-captains, Duprey and John McKenna ’10, as well as Senior leader Spencer Macquarrie, all were selected to participate in the Senior All-Star game this Wednesda. Duprey was also named to the Lacrosse All-American team this year as a defenseman.
