Andover swept every game in the doubles round and all but one in the singles match-ups, defeating NMH 7-1 last Saturday. In the past three games against NMH, St. Paul’s School, and Andover High School, the Boys Varsity Tennis team showed great improvement since the beginning of the season, adding many victories to the record. Each player is making small improvements to his game each match he plays as the team gain vitals experience and court time. Against NMH, Andover achieved a crushing 7-1 victory. In the doubles games, Trey Meyer ’09 and Foster Jebsen ’08 were paired up, as were Andrew Chan ’08 and Matt Schubert ’07. Andrew West ’08 and Thomas Clark ’07 made up the last doubles pair. The team chemistry coupled with consistent play from the baseline and aggressive shots in the frontcourt proved to be a winning combination. Andover won every doubles game with impressive scores. Meyer and Jebsen scored 8-2, West and Clark scored 8-1, and Chan and Schubert lead 7-1 until the doubles round was stopped to give way for singles games. As in doubles, the singles games also proved to be incredibly successful as the Andover players controlled the pace of their games. Meyer at the first position scored 6-0, 6-1. Jebsen at number two won 6-1. 6-0. Chan beat his opponent 6-3, 6-1. Captain Schubert, playing fourth, won 6-2, 6-2, while Clark shutout his opponent 6-0. 6-0. Finally, West, who recently recovered from a knee injury, won 6-0, 6-1. The St. Paul’s victory was not earned as easily. Andover won with a close end score of 4-3. Meyer beat his opponent in an impressive 6-0, 6-2. Jebsen also won in a similar fashion, scoring 6-3, 6-1. At the third position, Chan lost in a close 7-6, 6-4. Captain Schubert, at fourth, played the essential game that led to Andover’s overall victory. After winning the first set 6-3, Schubert lost the second in a close 7-5. Under pressure, Schubert pulled through to win a startling 6-1 in the third set. In the fifth slot, Andrew West lost his game 3-6 and 6-7. In the sixth spot, Clark was replaced by Jinwon Lee ’08 because of a serious hand injury. Lee lost his game 4-6, 7-6, 6-7. This match against St. Paul’s proved that the Andover Boys Tennis team improved since its first match of the season against B. B. &N.
