Girls Track Impressive first place finishes by the class of 2010 couldn’t overcome the depth of the Andover High School Indoor squad. While Andover took first place in almost every event, Andover High secured the majority of the crucial second and third spots, surpassing Andover by an extra few points. Notable performances by the Lower class included first place finishes by Colleen Flangan, Alexis Dawkins, Amanda Brisco, Melissa Ferrari and Tavie Abell. Coming off an injury Brisco successfully won the 300 in 42.43, .45 seconds before Captain Simone Hill ’08. Breezy Jordan ’09 and Gerogina Norton ’09 also won the two Mile (12:56) and the Mile (5:46), respectively. Andover Track faces a difficult period of training ahead, focusing now on refining the technical aspects of its performance. “A few fast people cannot win meets for us,” Coach Corbin Lang said. He continued, “We need to increase our depth. Track is truly a team sport when it comes to competition.” Boys Track Phillips Academy lost its meet to cross-town rival Andover High on Saturday by a final score of 52-38. But the day did not go without impressive individual performances. In the shot put, Dan Austin ’10 almost equaled his personal best with a throw of 38 feet and three inches, missing second place by just one inch. For the first time this season, Andover’s solid mile team was swept. This let AHS jump out to an insurmountable 17-1 advantage. Olamide Babatunde ’09 continued his strong form in the high jump, placing second with a leap of 5’2”, just two inches shy of his personal best. Anthony Morlani ’09 tried to start a rally by winning the hurdles, finishing with an impressive time of 7.19 seconds. Phil Hofer ’10 used a dramatic last second kick to win the 600 yard race by just six inches. “I knew from the beginning the race was going to be close” said Hofer. “I just picked the right moment to go and it worked out.” Meanwhile, Eli Howe ’09 won the Two Mile for the second straight week. In the 50-yard dash Captain Lou Tejada ’08 finished second, but would rebound to win the 300. Tejada is yet to lose a 300 race this season. Although the two teams had the same number of first place finishes, AHS was able to pull away by taking 2nd and 3rd in many events. As the season goes on, the depth will continue to improve. Andover gets a week off before hosting rival Exeter.
