A line of students stretched out of the door of Susie’s to get a free smoothie on January 17. With a new smoothie machine from the company Smoodi that was installed last year, the official promotional event featured a company representative who offered students free smoothies, branded merchandise, and opportunities for social media promotion.

Whoever went there would get a free smoothie, and there were cards that they gave out, [that] if you buy four smoothies, you get one free, but most people were there for the free smoothie. When I was there, there was a really long line, and it probably took half an hour to get a smoothie. People were just talking, and then there was that pineapple-person-costume thing, and there was [a Smoodi representative] just standing there and advertising.

I thought the system was a pretty cool idea. I feel like they weren’t overpriced. I feel like they were justly priced… It’s totally self-service. You get a cup of fruits, and it just blends it for you… [The Smoodi representative] was saying they were doing a promotion because students hadn’t tried the smoothies before. He wanted to gain exposure for the smoothies. He said they were working on lowering the prices as well… They also gave out free merch. I got a cap with the brand name and some pretty nice glasses.

I thought [the smoothie] was not bad. It definitely, obviously, tastes different than the smoothies they used to sell… Now that I’ve tried it, in the future, I might be more inclined to buy it, but I don’t think that I would buy it more just solely based on the fact that they were willing to come out to Andover. If I bought it again, it would mostly just be because I wanted to get a smoothie at that time.

It was an official promotion event… They’re trying to expand to different universities, and we were the first high school to have an event. [Also,] they talked about how you had to be 16 or 15 [years old] to be a Smoodi ambassador.
