Girls Softball (5-2) went up against Austin Preparatory School (Austin Prep) in a double header on Saturday and against Phillips Exeter Academy (Exeter) in an away game on Wednesday. Andover won all three games, scoring a total of 19 runs while Austin Prep and Exeter both scored 0.
With two back to back wins, Anaya Qamar ’26 expressed her excitement about Saturday. She noted that after the team’s slow start to the first game, Andover came back strong and ultimately won both games.
“We did very well overall, but we could definitely see that in the first game, we started off a little slower, and then we began to pick it up in the second one. Everyone played really well, especially because everyone was able to hit super well and keep the energy high throughout the game,” said Qamar.
Girls Softball focused on taking advantage of its winning opportunities on Saturday. Angie Ceballos Cardona ’25 praised the team’s significant improvement in hitting and scoring. She mentioned how after the team’s challenges with this in the past, the two games on Saturday demonstrated the team’s hard work.
“Something that was really important for us was to score or hit when there were runners in scoring position. That’s something we’ve been working on a lot and something that we’ve struggled with in the past, so we did a really good job on capitalizing with opportunities that we had to score some runs,” said Ceballos Cardona.
Cellabos Cardona additionally shouted out Gabby Potter ’27 for her position as catcher and her very first homerun.
Ceballos Cardona said, “[Gabby] really had a breakout in the second game. She got a couple of hits, and she ended up hitting her first homerun of the season, which was really great to see. She works so hard, and she’s our only catcher so she’s working really hard in that position, which I know must be tiring, so it was really nice to be able to applaud her for everything she’s worked for in this season.”
In the game against Exeter on Wednesday, Girls Softball won again in its first away game with great pitching and hits. Lilly Stephenson ’26 highlighted Andover’s pitcher, Ashley Schuman ’27, who ended the game striking out 13 batters. Stephenson also mentioned the high spirits of the team’s first away game.
“The game went pretty well and we had some good hits. We could have definitely scored more. The other team’s pitcher was pretty good, but our pitcher, Ashley, also did exceptionally well. It was our first away game so the atmosphere was a bit different from what it is normally, but overall, we had lots of high energy,” said Stephenson.
Girls Softball will play Cushing at home on Friday.
