Andover Girls Track Places Second at Interschols

In an exhilarating and nail-bitting competition, Andover Girls’ Track captured second at last weekend’s Interschols, missing first by a mere six points to Exeter. Marty Schnure ’06 and Cassie Tognoni ’05 were strong components to the team’s success, with outstanding performances in both hurdle events. Schnure ’06 hurdled to a win in both the 300 Meter and 100 Meter Hurdles with times of 15.82 and 46.82 respectively. Tognoni ’05 captured second in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 48.12 and finished third in the 100 Meter. Andover’s distance runners significantly contributed to the team’s success as well. Abby King captured two silvers in both the 1500 and 3000 Meter with times of 4:56.91 and 10:47.83 respectively. Rebecca Howe ’06 had an impressive fourth place finish in the 1500 Meter with a time of 5:09.07, and Debbie Kuhn ’05 placed eigth in the 3000 Meter. Tognoni ’05 sprung to second in the High Jump with a height of 5 feet, as did Colleen Thurman ’07 in the Long Jump with a distance of 16 feet 2 inches. Atime Lui ’08 finished seventh in the High Jump, and Katie Michaelson ’08 placed eighth in the Long Jump. Ola Canty ’07 placed seventh place in the Pole Vault followed by Jeannette Francis ’06 in eighth. Thurman ’07 concluded the jumping with a seventh place finish in the Triple Jump followed by Maura Mulroy ’07 in eighth. Aba Temeng ’06, Andover’s star shot put thrower, captured gold in the Shot Put with a distance of 35-04.25 feet and the Discus with a distance of 112-02 feet. Senior Yaa Frimpong finished with a season’s best and third place finish in both the Shot Put and the Discus. Charlotte MacMillan ’05 and Jennifer Meacham ’06 placed seventh and ninth in the Javelin. Captain Annie Wilkin ’05 was the sole Andover competitor to final in the excruciatingly close heat of the 100 Meter. She finished with a time of 13.87. Sonia DeYoung ’05, who just recently moved from distance races to sprints, had a stunning performance in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 1:02.13, followed by Rosie duPont ’06 with a time of 1:04.52. In arguably the most exciting races of the meet, the 4×100 Meter Relay and the 4×400 Meter Relay, Andover had strong showings. The tough competition in the 4×100 inhibited Andover from placing better than a fifth, but no one came close to Andovver’s 4×400 team, composed of DeYoung, Ali Holliday ’06, Canty, and Schnure. The girls won gold with a time of 4:13.40, finishing two seconds ahead of Exeter’s team.
