Andover Finishes One Game Short From Sweeping Rival Exeter

Over the past weekend, Andover’s Girls Varsity Tennis team took to the road to face off against BB&N and Phillips Exeter. Making its travels worthwhile, Andover came out on top, earning two glorious wins by beating BB&N’s Gold Knights with an incredible score of 15-0 and Exeter’s Big Red with a score of 8-1. Last Friday, Andover traveled to BB&N and completely swept the match with a score of 15-0. The girls really stepped up their game and played relentlessly, despite the injuries of Co-Captain Lauren Wilmarth ’09 and Fay Feghali ’12. Co-Captain Eliza Flynn ’10 started the meet off with a bang by dominating her BB&N counterpart and beating her in the first two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-1. In the second position, Elizabeth Kelly ’11 played an amazing game. She closed her match within the first two sets, 6-1 and 6-2. Stacia Vladimirova ’11 played next on the ladder and also dominated her opponent in straight sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Continuing down the ladder with Greta Rossi ’09, Emelyn Chew ’10 and Borkeny Sambou ’11, they continued Andover’s winning streak by beating their opponents in straight sets. To start the doubles portion of the meet, Flynn and Rossi overwhelmed their opponents and won their match with a score of 8-2. Next, Midori Ishizuka ’11 and Chew played together, winning their match with a score of 8-5. In the third position were Ishizuka and Kelly who shut out their opponents 8-0. On Saturday, Andover traveled to old-time rival Phillips Exeter’s campus. Despite the hot weather and the absence of Wilmarth and Feghali, Andover persevered to come out on top with a total match score of 8-1. When the singles portion of the match began, Flynn immediately opened up the gates for success, winning her match within the first two sets, 6-3 each time. Next, Kelly continued the winning streak by handily beating her opponent. In the third spot on the ladder, Vladimirova turned in the only loss of the day for Andover, losing in straight sets. Despite the loss, Rossi won her match in straight sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in the fourth position on the ladder. Lastly, Chew and Sambou closed out the match against Exeter, both in two sets and both with wins came with ease. In doubles, the girls continued to crush Exeter by winning all of their matches. The girls have a nice break in their schedule until May 6th, when they travel to Milton.
