Athlete Spotlight Lilybet MacRae ’13: Girl’s Swimming

Q. How do you feel competing against your sister? A. Kendall and I have been diving together for about five years and because in the past we have been in different age groups, this is the first time we have had to compete against each other. I don’t really like competing against Kendall. We have different diving styles. Kendall is a graceful diver, and I’m more of a power diver. We are both supportive of each other during meets and cheer each other on. But this summer we will both be in the 16-18 age group for both US diving and AAU diving. We both know either one of us can have a bad day or fail a dive and it’s over so we are very supportive of each other. Q. How did you feel after breaking the school record? A. I was excited to break the record but sad that it was Kendall’s record that I broke. Q. How did you start diving? A. Kendall broke her hand in gymnastics, so we both switched to diving because my parents thought it seemed like a safer sport. But I guess they did not realize that we would be doing flips from 7.5 meters (We do tower during the summer.). Q. Do you have any pre-meet rituals? A. Before home meets, the whole diving team will usually bike in the fitness center to warm up. And because I had a hamstring injury this past summer, I always stretch before I compete. Q. What is your favorite dive to compete with? A. My favorite dive to compete with is an inward one-and-a-half somersault pike. They used to be my least favorite because I was afraid of hitting the board, but once I understood the mechanics of the dive I felt more comfortable. And now it is my most consistent dive. Q. What are your goals for the rest of the season? A. My goal for the rest of the season is to do well at New England’s and try to get rid of my crow hop. Q. What has been your favorite moment of this season? A. One of my favorite moments was when Whitney [Glick ’11] scored a 10 on her front one-and-a-half pike at the Deerfield meet.
