Led by Joe Kruy ’12 and Andy Vailas ’10, Andover Boys Lacrosse got back on the winning track this week with two wins against Kimball Union and Brooks. Andover started the week fighting through the rain and came out with a 12-6 victory over Kimball Union Academy on Saturday followed by a 16-8 blowout over Brooks. After getting a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter, Kimball Union responded with two goals to tie it up at the end of the quarter. Coming into the second quarter, Andover came out with great intensity and put in three unanswered goals to bring the score to 5-2 at halftime. “We did a very good job playing in transition both offensively and defensively, defending the fast break and vice versa by creating the break,” Jay Dolan ’11 said about the first half. The second half began with two quick goals by Kimball Union. However, Andover held strong and dealt a knockout punch, going on a 6-0 run in response. This explosive series of goals by Andover sealed the deal, and the team added one more late in the game for a strong six goal win. “Overall we played really well. We still committed a few too many turnovers on offense, but much of that can be attributed to the rain messing with the sticks,” Dolan said. Will Walker ’11 also turned out a great performance, with three goals of his own. All around, it was a great win for Andover, and gave them some much-needed momentum going into a crucial Monday game against Brooks. In a high scoring matchup, Andover grabbed their second straight win against Brooks with a score of 16-8. Andover came out firing on all cylinders, sniping three goals in a three-minute span of the first quarter, including two by Captain John McKenna ’10. Brooks persevered and added a few goals of their, but Andover’s offense was too powerful on this day, scoring on every opportunity. “Offensively we played really well. One-on-one drives from behind and up top worked especially nicely today,” said Kruy. Kruy had four goals on the day, while Walker, Will Winkenwerder ’10 and Tom Shannon ’12 all added two. Andy Vailas ’10 had a fantastic performance in this one as well, putting three in the back of the net, his season high. “Vailas played some great lacrosse. He not only swept up ground balls off the face-off, but was also a huge threat offensively,” Kruy said. Spencer Macquarrie ’10 was the playmaker of the game, as he had five assists on the day. “We really pushed hard in transition and moved the ball well today with a lot of assisted goals,” Walker said. Andover will travel to Choate Saturday.
