Playlist of the Week: Nostalgic Movie Music

In the enchanting world of movie soundtracks, music can range from light-hearted and humorous tunes to dramatic orchestral arrangements. This week, Andover students reflected on and shared their favorite tunes from favorite childhood films like “Frozen” and “High School Musical.”

Aeva S. Cleare ’26: “I Am the Grinch” by Tyler, The Creator and Fletcher Jones

“‘I am the Grinch’ from Dr. Seuss’ ‘The Grinch’ is just really funny to me. It also has some more known bits like [the lyrics], ‘25, 25, 25, 25, 25 days and I’m off.’ Already, I love, love, love Tyler, The Creator, and the fact that he was writing music for one of my favorite childhood Christmas movies just made it better.”

Alex Dalrymple ’25: “City Of Stars” from “La La Land”

“It makes me think of the stars and I love looking up at night and thinking of that song. The emotions [‘City of Stars’] conveys are romance and nostalgia…bittersweet and being a kid. Every single song in ‘La La Land’ is beautiful, but this one really captures the essence of the entire musical.”

Anaya Qamar ’26: “Love Is an Open Door” from “Frozen”

“My current favorite song from a movie is ‘Love Is an Open Door’ from ‘Frozen.’ I think it is a really good song. I know the entire bridge verse and the back and forth between Anna and Hans; I think that part specifically is well made, along with the animation being great too. I’ve been watching Disney since I was a child.”

Whitney Kanter ’24: “Breaking Free” from “High School Musical”

“I think it’s just because we’ve grown up with [‘The High School Musical’ soundtracks]. They’re so much fun. The last song, ‘Breaking Free,’ is so pretty and it has so much nostalgic value to me. It’s very upbeat because it’s a musical, so it’s also supposed to be angsty teenagers in love. I think that’s what makes it really fun because it’s all happy, it’s like their happy ending at the end of a Disney movie.”
