Dexter Ices Andover in Scrimmage; Andover to Rely on Newcomers

Despite losing its scrimmage against Dexter Southfield School last Wednesday, Andover Girls Hockey has high hopes for its 11 new players and the upcoming season.

Newcomers include Marianne Brunet ’12, Anna Fucillo ’15, Caroline Garrity ’15, Renee Lamarche ’14, Hannah Sorkin ’14, Eva Toffoloni ’15, Kat Toffoloni ’15, Nik Toffoloni ’15 and goalkeepers Sara Merker ’15 Corinne Rivard ’12.

Greer McBeth ’12 said, “All of the new players are really talented. Most are young, so they have a lot of time to continue developing. Our additions are really promising for the program.”

Fucillo, Garrity, Merker, Rivard, Sorkin and returner Amy Morin ’14 bring a particular level of experience to Andover’s roster, having recently won the Massachusetts state hockey championship with the Middlesex Islanders, their club team. This coming March, they will travel to Texas to compete in a national tournament.

Returners include Catherine Anderson ’12, Cara Daly ’13, Emily Jia ’13, Jordan Johnson ’13, Sarah Marcotte ’13, McBeth, Morin, Gina Sawaya ’13 and Brooke Van Valkenburg ’12.

Andover gauged its strengths and weaknesses in its scrimmage against Dexter last Wednesday. Struggling to maintain possession, Andover fell 2-0 but showed offensive potential when they did manage to take the puck into their zone.

Andover held Dexter scoreless for the entire first period but let up one goal early in the second. Dexter continued to capitalize and raised its advantage 2-0 towards the middle of the second period.

Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the game, and Andover left the ice with a 2-0 loss. The team plans to focus on connecting as a unit on the ice to generate more scoring opportunities.

Andover will face BB&N tonight at 5:15 p.m. at home. The team will then square off against Northfield Mount Hermon tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at home.
