Girls Water Polo Regroups After Mid-Season Slump; Co-Captain Alpan ’06 Shows Offensive Prowess

After suffering two straight losses to Loomis Chaffee and Greenwich High, the Andover Girls Waterpolo team needed to right the ship quickly. Andover did just that in beating Suffield 9-5, then playing league-leading Choate closely in a 13-9 loss on Wednesday May 3. Andover rebounded to defeat Deerfield 8-6 last Saturday before losing to Exeter 12-7 on Wednesday. After consecutive losses, the team regrouped on Wednesday May 3 to exact revenge on Suffield for an early season loss in a 9-5 win. The team’s win was mostly because of the stellar play by Devon Zimmerling ’07 and the rest of Andover’s defenders, who only let a mere five goals into their coveted net. Kelly Chang ’07 led the offensive scoring with three goals, while Co-Captains Parla Alpan ’06 and Emily Brenner ’06 and Kimbo Chang ’08 netted two goals each. Coming out of the determined win against Suffield, the team split a pair of games on Saturday May 6, defeating Deerfield for the second time this season and losing against league-leading Choate. In the game against Deerfield, Co-Captain Alpan led the team with her spectacular six goals, while Kelly Chang and Caitlin Feeney ’08 each had a single goal apiece. The team played with fierce enthusiasm against the top-ranked Choate team with Co-Captain Alpan leading the scoring again with four goals. Kelly Chang followed up with three, and Kimbo Chang rounded out the scoring with a respectable two. The game was neck-and-neck, until Andover visibly showed signs of fatigue in the fourth quarter and Choate took full control of the game. This could be attributed however to the fact that Andover played a game immediately before this one and Choate was fresh. This past Wedneday, Andover lost 12-7 to #2 seeded Exeter—a team that is known as extremely “fast” because of its quick ball handling skills and rapid plays. Taryn Wiens ’09 had the opportunity to play starting goalie during the first quarter before Amy Fenstermacher ‘07 was able to return from her AP and play the last three quarters. Co-Captain Alpan once again led Andover in scoring with four solid goals. Overall, these couple weeks have been rough. The team will see Worcester Academy for the second time this season this Saturday, and then will compete in post-season tournament games.
