Taking Some Hits with PG Nick Hennessey ’05

– Standing at 6’5”, 245 Nick Hennessey is a man of substance. He also starts on both offense and defense as a lineman for the Andover football team. Born and raised in Danvers, Mass, Hennessey is one of the eight postgraduate football recruits brought in this year in an attempt to beef up the PA griddlers. Being desperately behind schedule in the conducting of this interview, I scheduled my conversation with Nick for 11:30 Wednesday Morning in commons. Fortunately (maybe unfortunately), I had the pleasure of interviewing Nick in the presence of his best friends here at Andover, the other Bartlet PGs, who made their presence known throughout the course of the interview. Nick how did you first get involved in sports? “I…uh…uum… (pause)…everybody plays sports.” Did you play any other sports growing up? “I have actually, I played basketball, baseball, lacrosse, hockey, and soccer, but of those the only ones I still play are basketball and lacrosse.” In football have you always played on the line? “No, I played running back and linebacker in my younger days.” What made you decide to be a lineman? “I am slow.” At this point Jerrel Smith ’05 and Martin Donohoe ’05, clearly disapproving of Nick’s answer, chime in with answers of their own: Smith: “because you like to play in the mud!” Donohoe: “because he’s a big naughty boy.” Nick laughs but opts to stick with his original answer, as I continue with the interview. What do you do to get psyched? “I don’t get psyched up… (pause)…I get angry when we’re losing but that’s it.” Favorite food? “I am a fan of chocolate ice-cream.” Favorite sports drink? “Fruit punch Gatorade.” Do you play any instruments? “Adrian plays the oboe.” How’s the love life? “Struggling.” If you could be any animal what would you be and why? “I would be a satyr because Mr. Kalkstein says they’re cool.” Best sport in the world? “Football.” Any closing comments? “Wally is the man.” When I think of Nick Hennessey the word jolly is the first which comes to mind. Talking with Nick, he comes across as a very content individual, who is quite secure in his surroundings. The kid has a great sense of humor, and athletically has proved himself time and time again on the gridiron this season. But in the end, I think teammate, dorm-mate, and good friend Jerrel Smith said it best: “Nick is a funny guy, and he’s lazy. Me and Nick probably combine to be the laziest people on earth.”
