Boys Water Polo Embarrassed by Deerfield Academy, Struggles to Stay Afloat against Rival Phillips Exeter

The Andover Boys Water Polo team suffered two rough losses this week, losing 15-4 to Deerfield and 16-1 to Exeter. The boys kept the Big Green’s lead to one goal in the first half, but Andover fell apart after that. Allowing four careless goals in two minutes, all starters were removed from the pool and benched. The reserves gave up five goals in the final 2:14. The Big Blue left the pool embarrassed after the loss. The final score was 15-4, with nine fourth quarter goals for Deerfield. On Wednesday against Exeter, Andover started the game flat. After one quarter, PA trailed 6-0. The Big Blue improved in the second quarter, giving up only three goals. The second half was more of the same as Exeter dominated Andover with a final score of 16-1. Jamie Neuwirth ’06 scored Andover’s only goal. The game was an improvement at least from PA’s last match-up with Exeter in which the Big Blue allowed 20 goals. In response to the team’s results over the past week and the upcoming season finale, Captain Rob Anderson ’06 said, “Deerfield and Exeter were unfortunate losses. We lost our focus, and that mental absence screwed us up. Hopefully, these upcoming practices can help us get back to where we were. If that happens, we can head into the weekend confident and possibly leave with two more wins under our belt.”
