Distance Team Leads Girls Track to Second Place; Anthony Ambrosi ’07 Wins Gold in Boys Javelin

GIRLS TRACK A select group of Andover athletes led the Girls Track to second in the Track and Field Championships last Saturday. Loomis Chaffee hosted the event, where many strong performances, especially in the distance events, led to Andover’s success among the 14 competing schools. Berol Dewdney ’09 stole the show with a double victory, first in the 1500m and then in the 3000m, in which she achieved a personal best time of 10:26. In the 1500m, Dewdney dueled for first with a tough St. Paul’s competitor, eventually breaking away to win in 4:50. Indeed, there were several personal records broken, most notably Georgina Norton’s 20+ second improvement in the 3000m, in which she finished fourth with a time of 10:59. Catherine Coppinger’s win in the 800m finished off Andover’s sweep of the distance events. Her time of 2:21, a personal best, was just one second off the track record. Aubrey Zimmerling finished fifth in the race, in 2:27. In the sprints, Simone Hill ’08 was the only Andover runner to place in the finals of the 100m, finishing fourth with a time of 13.08 seconds. With a time of 1:03, Kara Hollis ’07 placed 11th in the standings for the 400m, followed by Zahra Bhaiwala ’10 in 19th. McDonough placed third in the finals of the 100m in 17.44 seconds, with Canty in eighth with 18.86. They switched places in the 300m—Canty finished fourth and McDonough placed 12th. In addition to her two hurdle events, Canty also ran on both of Andover’s relay teams. The 4x100m relay team, which consisted of Katherine Matsumoto ’07, Colleen Thurman ’07, Canty and Hill, placed fourth overall. The 4×400 team of Canty, Alexis Dawkins ’10, McDonough, and Coppinger finished second overall. Andover was also successful in the field events. Melissa Ferarri ’10 finished fourth with a jump of 4’8”. Ale Moss ’07 tied the track record with her winning jump of 9’6” in the pole vault, while Matsumoto’s respectable 7’6” jump placed her third. Despite these impressive performances, Andover finished second to Exeter at Interschols. The team will have one last chance to defeat Exeter next Saturday. BOYS TRACK Despite amazing performances by many runners, the Boys Track team could not defend its title from last year as Division I Interscholastic Champions. Andover places sixth overall against some extremely tough competition.Eli Howe commented, “It’s not at all surprising, considering the amount of injuries we’ve had and key runners we’re missing.” In the 100 meters, Helal Syed ’07 sprinted across the finish line at 11.74 seconds to place sixth overall, while Lou Tejada ’08 ran an 11.86 second 100 meters to get eighth.
