Boys Lacrosse Losses Against Deerfield but Gains Momentum With New Hampton

Co-Captain Joshua Heaney ’24 weaves through his opponent toward the goal.

Saturday 4/27 – Andover: 4   Deerfield: 23

Wednesday 5/1 – Andover: 12  New Hampton: 10

On Saturday, Boys Lacrosse suffered a tough loss against Deerfield but came up with a win against New Hampton on Wednesday. Its record now stands at 7-4.

Logan Cove ’24 commented on the shortcomings of the team against Deerfield. Ranked at number four in the Prep School division, Deerfield led a dominant offensive game against the 13th-ranked Andover team. Cove shared the plan for the upcoming games this season.

“It didn’t go very well. I think we all played a lackluster game… We have a lot of drills set up by coaches to focus on things that we didn’t do too [well] on in the game like clearing, riding, offensive formations, running plays, and defensively breaking down Deerfield’s offense,” said Cove.

Jacob Gourley ’26 recognized the areas that needed to be cleaned up before the next match, acknowledging that Andover could have played better.

Gourley said, “It wasn’t great. We have to reflect a lot… There were a lot of drop balls, and we missed a lot of ground balls.”

Gourley proceeded to highlight Jack Farrell ’26 as a notable player who held up the defensive line.

“[Farrell] had a very good game and played exceptionally well as a D-Middie and a D-Pole,” said Gourley.

Before the game against New Hampton, Cove had commented on the goal for the match, which focused on identifying and capitalizing on the opposing team’s weaknesses.

Cove said, “We want to clean up mistakes. We are very focused on New Hampton, our next opponent. We hope to shut down their offense, figure out where their weaknesses on defense are, score a lot of goals, and hopefully make a statement game.”

The game against New Hampton resulted in a 12-10 victory. However, the team was not able to maintain their energy and slowed down midway through the game. In the end, Boys Lacrosse gained its composure back, noted Jude Scarbrough ’25.

“It was a lot of fun. We started pretty good. And then we sort of took the foot off the gas a little bit. But, we still finished strong in the end, and the win is what matters,” said Scarbrough.

Scarbrough credited Tommy McCool ’25 for his offensive plays, which resulted in several goals for the team.

“Tommy had a good amount of goals. Hit some impressive ones on the pipes, and they really stood out to me,” said Scarbrough.

Scarbrough then underscored the next steps for the program.

Scarbrough said, “We need to work on executing on offense and actually scoring, not turning over the ball with silly things, and… going hard for all four quarters, not letting one quarter where we just kind of sit around a little bit.”

Boys Lacrosse will play Loomis Chaffee on Saturday.
