Discussing the practices of journalism in secondary school newspapers, members of the present and former editorial boards of The Phillipian attended the Association of Independent School Journalist (AISJ) Conference this past Sunday at Phillips Exeter Academy. Joining other high school journalists from Exeter, St. Paul’s School and Loomis Chafee, Andover students discussed board production, layout, freedom of the student press, and censorship issues. Former Exonian Editor-in-Chief Robert Baldi PEA ’03, aided by his successor, Cristian Núñez PEA ’04, coordinated the day’s events. Núñez believes that the formation of an organization such as the AISJ is important for high school journalists, as “boarding schools are usually isolated and keep to themselves.” He continued,” [The AISJ] conference will help bring the schools together…[and] we can have a more open sharing of ideas.” This AISJ conference, founded three years ago by a former Exeter student for an independent project, looks to foster open-forum discussion of issues challenging secondary school publications.
