Best In Town: Victorious Over Brooks and Gov’s

Eva Toffoloni ’15 picked up the rebound off Co-Captain Hannah Sorkin ’14 and passed to Anna Fucillo ’15, who slapped the ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead halfway through the second half.

Andover Field Hockey traveled to Brooks this past Friday looking to avenge its loss to last year’s cross-town rival and nabbed a 3-1 win. On Saturday, Andover fell to Tabor 4-3, but rallied to beat Governor’s Academy 3-0 on Wednesday.

Against Brooks, Eva Toffoloni was a constant offensive threat from the first whistle, tallying Andover’s first goal off a pass from Eliza Quigley ’15 at 15:15 in the first half.

“Scoring first always gives us confidence. We feel as if it gives us a solid handle on the game and power to move forward and play even harder,” said Hannah Burns ’15.

Seven minutes later, Brooks answered with a breakaway goal, tying the score at 1-1. Goalie Ashlyn Aiello ’14 stopped the first shot but missed the rebound.

Andover was quick to recover with Fucillo’s goal off the back of the net.

Andover ensured a win on its third goal off an offensive corner with just under three minutes left in the game. After receiving an outlet pass from Nikoletta Toffoloni ’15, Lexi Davidson ’17 set the play up with a shot from the top of the circle that Quigley picked up and placed in the net.

“It felt great to beat Brooks, especially because they walked onto the field thinking that they were going to get a win,” said Eva Toffoloni.

Playing in Marion, Mass., Tabor dealt Andover its first loss of the season. Andover took the lead early, capitalizing on a corner less than five minutes into the game when Davidson received the ball at the top of the circle and fired a shot past the goalie.

Tabor answered, but Andover take the lead 2-1 before halftime when Lauren Overly ’17 banged home a goal off a scrum out front.

Midway through the second half, Tabor was able to regain the lead 3-2, until Eva Toffoloni responded within a minute of Tabor’s goal to tie the score at 3-3.

However, Andover struggled as Tabor took the lead with about four minutes left in the second half. Despite a late game push, Andover was unable to score again.

However, Andover turned the tables on Wednesday, out-shooting Governor’s 13 to 3 in a 3-0 victory.

“We took our loss and used it for motivation in practices and games. In the Governor’s game opposed to the Tabor game, we hustled more, played with more intensity. We communicated better, and we played to our strengths,” said Sorkin.

Once again, Eva Toffoloni started Andover’s lead off of a corner about halfway through the first half, and Andover carried its lead into the second half. Ten minutes in, Quigley scored Andover’s second unanswered goal.

Burns put the game out of reach, rifling home the third goal off of a fast break.

Andover, with a 4-1 record, looks to use its momentum against Choate at home this Saturday.
