PA Cycling Sweeps Newfound Classic, Filiberti and Stein Place Third, Fourth

Last Saturday, Alex Hugon ’07 and Dave Heighington ’06 stepped up from the Andover Cycling’s C team to have outstanding races with the B team. Arielle Filiberti ’07 and Lilli Stein ’07 also had great performances at the Newfound Classic, the league championship. The weekend’s race was hosted by Exeter on a challenging mile-long course on which the riders had to complete ten laps. For this race, each rider was paired with another from their team. The time at which the second rider crossed the line was counted as the duo’s finish time. For the Boys A Race, James Krendell-Clark ’07 and Colin Touhey ’06 came in sixth place overall. Andy Clay ’08 and Andy St. Lous ’05 were also in the A race, finishing seventh, ahead of Mike Monaco ’06 and Julian Dames ’05 in ninth. After exemplary performance with the C team all season, Hugon and Heighington entered into the B race in which they finished third. Nick Bowen ’05 and Patrick Fender ’07 were just behind in seventh. Will Hunckler ’08 and Brian Deng ’07 took third place on the C team. For the girls team, Stein and Filiberti took turns pacing each other, coming in second against the other A riders. Because of an odd number of girls, Roxy Pierson ’07 had to work with an Exeter rider; they finished seventh. Next up was the New England League championship, the Newfound Classic. The course was made up of one long circuit which was completed 1.5 times for a total of about 25 miles. Clay placed third shoulder, battling to shoulder during the final pull. St. Louis was nearby in fourth and Touhey was right with them in seventh. These performances earned the Boys A team first place in the league meet and second overall for the season. In the B race, Andover placed three in the top six: Alex Wolf ’06, Alex Green ’07, and Bowen. The B team also won the team title. It was a big day for Heighington as he won the C race. Half-way through the second lap he made a break and rode solo for the rest, winning easily. The C team, like all other sections, won the team crown. The girls A team also had a victory in the team championship. Stein, Filiberti, and three other riders broke from the pack early and rode together. Filiberti finished third, inches behind second. Stein was fourth, followed by Pierson in tenth. The women’s performance was enough to solidify second overall for the season.
