Co-Captain Joy Joung ’07 Stops 18 of 19 Brooks Shots in Net; Defense Only Allows Three Goals in Challenging Three-Win Week

Meg Shea ‘07, Co-Captain Olivia Coffey ‘07, and Emily Weedon ‘07 combined for seven goals in three games this past week, as the Andover Girls Hockey team continued its winning streak. On Saturday, the girls traveled to western Massachusetts to play a talented Deerfield squad. On Monday, Andover played a much closer road opponent in Brooks. On Wednesday, Andover had a match with their biggest rivals, the Big Red, Exeter. The game against Deerfield was completely dominated by Andover. With 6:24 left to play in the first, Co-captain Coffey put Andover up 1-0, as she collected the loose puck in the slot and made finished the play with a strong goal. Andover was not content going into the locker room after the first period with only a one-goal lead. With 1:54 left to play in the period, Shea corralled the puck behind the net and made a beautiful pass in front to Emily Weedon ’07, who took a wrist shot into the back of the net. Deerfield came out ready to play in the second period, but Alissa Fromkin ’09 withered shut down its offense until Andover regained its composure and regained control of the game. With about eight minutes left to play in the period, Shea put in a final goal, earning Andover a 4-1 win. The game against Brooks was another solid performance by Andover. There was nothing the goalie could do when Coffey ripped one from the slot, over the goalie’s blocker. Line-mate Lindsey Weiner ‘08 assisted the goal. In the third period, Andover extended its lead to 2-0, as Stephanie Clegg ’08 read the play beautifully. She stole the puck in the neutral zone, and skated in on a breakaway and picked the perfect corner to shoot the puck into. Brooks cut the lead to 2-1 with a little over four minutes left to play. Andover showed that it was determined to win and it finished the game with a score of 3-1. Co-Captain Joy Joung ’07 was in goal for Andover, and she played an impressive game, stopping 18 of the 19 shots thrown her way. Andover capped off its impressive week in the best way possible, beating its rival Exeter, 3-1. Andover out-shot Exeter 13-5 in the opening period, which included a number of quality scoring chances such as one shot by Coffey, which rang off the post. Andover finally got the lead early in the second. Kaitlyn McInnis ’09 had a beautiful one-timer off a nice pass from Shea, which found the bottom left corner. Just a few moments later, Weedon netted her second goal of the week off a wrist shot from the slot with assists going to Shea and Harisiades. Andover would continue to score again in the third period, securing the win over its perennial rival.
