Keeping On Track

_While running is a great way to stay in shape and get healthy, it can be hard to find good running trails that are easily accessible from campus. John Gorton, Boys Indoor Track Captain 2014-2015, has recommended a few trails that are conveniently located near campus and also feature scenic backdrops._

The first option that Gorton details is a mild three mile trail that is easily accessible from campus. This route commences on the Vista directly in front of Samuel Phillips Hall, and follows Phillips Street to Spring Grove cemetery, before looping back to campus via Main Street. This beginner-friendly circuit is great for a quick, convenient run but also offers a chance to venture into the serene Spring Grove cemetery. Dominated by trees and quaint houses throughout, this route is a fantastic run for those looking for some fresh air and scenic views.

The next route recommended by Gorton is a scenic yet not very strenuous five mile route looping through Merrimack College. This circuit starts beside Gelb Science Center, on Highland Road. For the next few miles, this trail winds through a suburban area while passing a few neighborhoods, but it remains quiet and picturesque throughout. Eventually, this trail will culminate in the pristine campus of Merrimack College, and then Elm Street can be taken back into Andover downtown. Overall, this route offers a suburban feel with the highlight being a foray into Merrimack College campus.

The final trail suggested by Gorton is the most arduous, as it meanders on for about seven miles through the Sanctuary. Located in Pine Knoll cluster, the Sanctuary is a pristine stretch of woods hidden behind campus. Gorton recommends running loops of the main trail to start, while more ambitious runners can spend hours roaming through the spinoffs and minor trails. A huge advantage of this trail is the lack of concrete, as running on concrete for prolonged periods can cause aches and sores in the legs. Also, where this trail differs from previous routes is that it offers complete immersion into nature – there are no houses, no shops, and no roads. All in all, this spectacular route through the Sanctuary is perfect for runners looking to lose themselves within the twisting confines of nature.
