Andover Field Hockey to Rely on Core of 12 Returners

Though struggling with number, Andover Field Hockey looks to build on a strong 2009 performance in the coming season. Last fall, Andover powered its way to an undefeated regular season. After a quarterfinal win, the team fell to eventual New England Champions Hotchkiss in the semi-finals. Goalie and Co-Captain Shannon McSweeney ’11 said, “After being undefeated in the regular season, we have a lot to live up to; after losing in the tournament, we are seeking a little revenge as well.” Kellie Walsh ’11 and Summer Washburn ’11 will captain alongside McSweeney. These three will be joined by returning letterman Nat Sohn ’11, Kate Weiner ’11, Mari Walsh ’11, Hannah Beinecke ’12, Brooke Van Valkenburg ’12, Catherine Anderson ’12, Elizabeth Paul ’12, Greer MacBeth ’12 and Cara Daly ’13. Coach Kate Dolan said, “Each and every returner will be counted upon to be a major contributor with her skill, determination, and enthusiasm.” Andover will rely heavily on the experience and breadth of their returning twelve while the team struggles with depth and numbers. McSweeney said, “We haven’t had the numbers that we had hoped for during tryouts, but what we lack in size, we hope to make up for in precision and enthusiasm. With so many returners, we’re trying to pick up where we left off a little bit and continue learning the strategy and theory of the game.” Andover also has to adjust to a new self-start rule which now takes effect in the sport. The new rule allows players to take the ball themselves on free hits, as opposed to previously having to first pass to another player. The self-start rule will speed up the game, making it a more popular spectator sport, but also requires more endurance and mental focus from the team. Most of preseason focused on fundamental skills. Looking ahead to the upcoming practices, team plans to stress repositioning away from the defenders, opening space for ball movement. With better communication and more diagonal ball dribbling, the team’s movement should greatly improve. Dolan said, “We will go as far as we are willing to challenge, push, and help one another. High expectations require hard work and discipline, and we have very strong, positive leadership from all of our seniors.” The team made one promising addition to the coaching staff in Olivia Achtmeyer. Achtmeyer hails from the Middlesex program and will assist the Andover squad this fall. Andover will open its season this Saturday at home versus Worcester Academy.
