On Saturday, the crowd rose to its feet as Kira Wyckoff ’11 fired a shot on the Deerfiled goalie with seconds remaining on the clock. As the shot sailed wide and time expired, Andover fell to Deerfield 6-7. This Wednesday, the team lost again, this time in a 4-9 game against Hopkins.
Deerfield came into Andover for a rematch after the two teams met exactly a week prior.
“It was the best water polo game I have played in here at Andover,” said Co-Captain Alanna Waldman ’10.
The energy in the pool, in the stands and on the pool deck right from the start of the game got the hype up among the girls. Still burning from the loss a week ago, the girls exploded with energy in the first quarter.
Within the first ten seconds, the team tossed the ball past the Deerfield goalie.
The Andover defense was strong throughout as they stayed on the Deerfield players. On top of their stifling defense, the Andover offense was almost perfect.
The game came down to the final quarter. Julia Torabi ’12 scored a beautiful lob shot from the corner of the pool as the shot-clock hit zero to tie the game at six apiece.
Deerfield scored on the next possession to regain its lead. It all came down to the final three seconds as Andover had the ball with a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately, Wyckoff’s shot at the buzzer barely missed the goal. Andover lost, 6-7.
The team had another chance to make it to the tournament this Wednesday against Hopkins.
Goalie Co-Captain Taylor Clarke ’10 got so many saves during the first three quarters, scorekeepers ran out of space on the scoring sheet.
Despite Clarke’s strong performance in net, Andover’s offense could not convert, and the team fell short, 4-9.
The loss to Hopkins dashed Andover’s tournament hopes.
