Andover Seeks to Avenge Last Year’s Loss at Interschols with NEPSSA Championship

Despite only having three Seniors on the team in 2008, Boys Varsity Swimming recorded a second-place finish at Interschols last season. With a solid nucleus led by Co-Captains Brendan Deveney ’09 and Steven Lee-Kramer ’09, Andover hopes to make another run at the New England title. Andover progressed tremendously throughout last season. After an early loss to Deerfield, the host team of the Championships, Andover identified its strengths and weaknesses. When the teams matched-up again at Interschols, Andover came into the meet with a plan. The team’s key strategy, placing the largest number of swimmers in the evening finals, proved to be successful until the concluding events, when Deerfield took the lead. Although Deerfield took first by just a few points, Andover came away satisfied with the runner-up trophy. Of the many highlights of last year’s season, Andover’s impressive win against Exeter for the third year in a row definitely stands out. Although Exeter took an early lead, Andover quickly caught up during the 200 freestyle and pulled ahead with a strong finish. Andover ended the meet with 41 points, while Exeter earned just 36. Although Andover lost Julian Azaret ’08, an amazing asset to the team, mid-season, Captains Brenden Deveney ’09 and Kevin Zhai ’08 still led Andover to a very successful season. Since last year’s team had only three Seniors, the majority of the team consisted of underclassmen and Uppers. Lee-Kramer and Deveney look to lead the way for Andover. With their great performances in last year’s relays, especially in the 200, where they helped break a school record, the two will undoubtedly continue to stand out. Other swimmers to look out for this year include Curtis Hon ’10, Matt Mahoney ’11 and Jimmy Brenner ’10. Competing in four different events at New Englands, Hon managed to place in the top four in every one. After breaking several records and placing fourth in the 200 free, sixth in the 500 free, and first in the 400 free relay at New Englands, Mahoney will be a force in the pool. Brenner, who is currently participating in the Oxbow program, will come back to Andover this winter. A few new additions to the team include Lorenzo Conte ’12, Derrick Choi ’12 and Calvin Aubrey ’12. After winter break, Andover will open up the league season with a meet at Choate.
