There is no doubt that the Girls Varsity Tennis team will have a successful season this spring. The team is anxiously awaiting its upcoming match against Nobles this Saturday. Captain Julia Watson ’07 comments, “We’re expecting to win, but I also think we can learn a lot from this first match.” Watson, who was on SYA last year continues, “I feel confident about this upcoming season, and I’m looking forward to seeing everybody play.” Returning player Lauren Wilmarth ’09 says, “Nobles is a good team. I’m excited to play them and hoping for the best.” The players have been working on their game to prepare for some of the toughest matches of the season. Exeter has a strong team this year and will prove to be one of the more challenging matches for Andover. The team is focused on playing hard during its matches and doing its best against each team. Milton and BB&N are just two teams that Andover has had trouble with in the past. Wilmarth comments, “Milton and BB&N both lost their two best players. It’s not that Andover hasn’t lost any good players, but we have gained some really great ones.” Wilmarth points out, “One of our advantages is that we have a lot of new depth this year.” Both Watson and Wilmarth agree that Eliza Flynn ’10 and Rachel Blake ’08 are two very promising new additions to the team. Flynn is the only freshman on the team but Wilmarth says, “She is a really tough player and can definitely hold her own”. Having depth will not only be beneficial in the team’s regular season but also at Interschols at the end of May. “Because the team has a lot of depth, hopefully everyone will place higher in their bracket at Interschols.” The team placed fifth last season but Wilmarth remarks, “we will definitely do better than last year”. Watson concludes, “Our main goal is to win Interschols, but the best thing for now is to play the season match by match.” It seems that Girls Tennis will be victorious this spring.
