Andover Places Third in Andover Invitational Tournament

Last Sunday Andover Ultimate played in the Andover Invitational Tournament, placed third, improving its season record to 7-1. “It was great playing in our first tournament of the season. After playing six games in one day, the team now knows what it feels like to play in a tournament atmosphere. We played very well, and hopefully we can carry this tournament success to the Amherst tournament next week, and the New England Tournament later in the season,” said Captain Duncan Crystal ’10. Andover took the field against Newton North in its first of six games. Earlier in the season Andover dominated Newton North, winning 15-6. But in this game the opposition came ready to play, and after a close, hard fought game, Andover came out on top 9-7. Andover continued its success against Holliston High School in its second game. Andover dominated the field, and won by a large margin of 11-4. The next opponent was Concord Carlisle. In its second game of the season, Andover significantly outplayed Concord Carlisle, winning 15-7. But in the tournament, Concord Carlisle played much better, challenging Andover to a tough game. Despite the improvements, the team was no match for Andover, as Andover went on to win 11-7. “Winning the first three games of the tournament was a great confidence booster. The team got its form, and we started to play very cohesively, “said Kyle Leahy ’10. Andover entered its fourth game knowing that it would have to work hard for a win, as Needham High was the top seeded team in the tournament. Andover couldn’t get anything going, and lost 11-3. This was Andover’s first loss of the season. “It’s always tough to lose. But, we did run some great plays during the game, proving to the team that we can compete with the best. Next week we are competing in the Amherst tournament A division and we will definitely see teams just as good, if not better than Needham. It was great to get some action in against a very tough team,” said Dylan Gully ’12. Andover came out it its fifth game of the day looking to get back on track. Andover ran great plays and finished on many important drives to dominate North Reading High, and earned an astounding 11-2 win. For the sixth and final game of the day, Andover took the field against Andover High School. Once more Andover took the field ready to play, and chalked up another win along with a third place finish in the Andover Invitational. On Wednesday Andover traveled to Lexington High School, winning 15-8, and improving its record to 8-1 on the season. Andover looks to continue its strong play in the Amherst Tournament this weekend.
