Co-Captain Robert Brown ’25 leads the baseball team with enthusiasm and diligence. Brown strives to model the ideal virtues of a well-rounded player and person, on and off the field. During a rocky season with many injuries to key players, Brown stands as an inspiration to many members of the team.
Brown began playing baseball at the age of two. Surrounded by baseball, he quickly developed a love for the game.
“According to my parents, when I first started walking, I started picking up a baseball. I was always throwing the ball around. I was swinging a little toy bat they had for me, and a big part of it was that I was born into a family that loved baseball. My uncle is a big fan. My grandfather is a big fan. Being around the sport, always having the Red Sox games on, contributed to my attraction towards the game,” said Brown.
Being a leader has always been second nature to Brown, but being a Co-Captain gave him even more room to display his leadership abilities, like his willingness to lead by example.
“No matter where I am, what label I have, or what I am doing, I’m trying to be a leader and have that leadership role. Being a captain has propelled me into a position where I’m forced to be a leader, and that’s been great. The whole season, I’ve tried to lead by example. I try to do the right things. A major part of being a captain is not only instructing people on what to do and ensuring that everyone else is following, but also that you’re following the same values you enforce on everyone else,” Brown said.
In a season plagued by injuries, Brown has stepped up to be a pillar of support for the team. Brown recognized the struggles his team has experienced and persevered through this season.
Brown said, “We had a tough season. A big part of it was going down with many injuries. In a way, those injuries showed how we work as a team because some guys stepped into roles they may not have expected. They’ve never experienced baseball at the level they were playing, so a big part was keeping those team values together even through tough times. We did a good job of that. Even though the season may not have turned out how we hoped, we kept those team values throughout the end.”
Brown will continue to play baseball in college, where he has committed to play for Penn State. He shared his hopes to continue his lifelong passion in the majors.
“I’m excited to go. I’ve been waiting a long time. I love baseball and am upset that it’s over. However, I’m excited to advance to the next level and have a promising career at Penn State. After that, I will try to play baseball as long as possible. My dream is to get drafted, that’s the goal, but I have to work every day to get there. The plan is to play in college at Penn State and have a good career there, and hopefully get drafted after my Junior year,” said Brown.
