Eric Wang ’25 throws a pass in game against St. Sebastians.
Ultimate Frisbee faced a challenging week, suffering two hard-fought losses against strong opponents. Despite not securing victories, the team demonstrated resilience and is actively preparing for its upcoming game against Northfield Mount Hermon while celebrating individual successes from the matches this week despite the losses.
Nathaniel Goldberg ’27 highlighted several standout performances across both games, recognizing teammates Everett Woo ’25, Cyrus Law ’27, Fumi Kimura ’25, Zachary Yuan ’27, and Dean Yang ’27.
“Everett Woo, he had a good game. He led the team very well today. Cyrus Law had some good throws and our other Captain Fumi, he brought some good energy to the game [against Lexington]. [Against St. Sebastian’s] Zachary Yuan had some good catches and he got a couple points and Dean Yang had some good throws and some good defense in that game as well,” said Goldberg.
Yang reciprocated the praise, emphasizing Goldberg’s versatility and Paxton Auguste ’28’s defensive prowess.
“Nate had some good plays. He was all over the field. He was pretty good. He had a couple long throws that went the full field because our game plan was basically just chuck it downfield and we had to win. He also played pretty good defense overall making a lot of plays. Paxton Auguste had a really nice block in the end zone, and he mainly scored and he assisted to the score. It was a really nice block and overall he played a pretty solid game. I don’t think he had any turnovers which is technically solid. Fumi was pretty good. He was moving the disc a lot and our offense was really good because of him,” said Yang.
The matchup against Lexington, ranked 25th nationally, provided a particularly valuable challenge. Despite the eventual loss, the team started with impressive energy, taking an early 3-0 lead.
“[Lexington]’s a really good team. They’re the 25th team in the country, which is pretty good. We started very strong. We took a three zero lead off the start. We brought the intensity at the start, which was good and I think we played pretty good. We were just playing against a team that’s very good as well and they challenged us to make us be our best. We had some really good defense and a lot of blocks that led to the scores at the start of the game. We played some really good high intensity defense and we forced them to cause a lot of turnovers, which they don’t normally do,” said Goldberg.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on specific tactical improvements in practice, with particular emphasis on countering zone defenses.
“We know a lot of the teams are going to run zones, so we’ve been practicing that at practice. Especially trying to connect passes and build team chemistry, to try to work against the zone defense in particular,” said Goldberg.
Yang noted significant progress between the St. Sebastian’s and Lexington games, highlighting offensive adjustments that proved effective.
“We got better between St. Sebastian’s and Lexington. Our offense we found that a sort of small but fast moving is the best way that we function. We tried a lot of that today against Lexington and that worked pretty well, just moving quickly and always finding someone open to pass it to. We’re still working on our two main types of offense. One where the other team’s playing his own defense and the other one where they’re playing man on man defense. For both of them we’re working on figuring out where there are spaces, where you’re cutting to and also staying out of that when you’re not supposed to be there. That’s sort of the main goal, it was to figure that out so our offense could have a better flow,” said Yang.
Ultimate Frisbee will face Northfield Mount Hermon away on Saturday.
