Playlist of the Week: Sounds of Spring

As the snow melts from the grass and the first buds of spring start to show, music also goes through seasonal changes. Replacing the slow, heavy tracks of winter, upbeat songs have taken over students’ playlists. This week, Andover students shared songs that define spring for them, whether it be Afrobeat rhythms or soft jazz.

Paige Zhu ’27: “Bags” by Clairo
“It has a really good spring vibe to it. I guess it’s just a very happy song and it’s upbeat. So it’s like coming out of the winter, and it’s just more like a hype song. Summer’s more of a hype music era and then winter’s just sad music. But it’s kind of like the happy-go-lucky music that doesn’t fit into anywhere else.”

Ethan Zhu ’26: “Love Me Not” by Ravyn Lenae
“It seems pretty upbeat and positive, and it’s a good song to get you going and get you in a vibe, that’s why I like it. For one, it’s more positive. It’s a song about love and things like that, and that can be associated with spring in that sense. It’s supposed to be more of a happy song, so I guess with spring and the new blooming of flowers and things like that, the two can be connected in that way.”

Mayumi Kawano ’25: “Me and Your Mama” by Childish Gambino
“The intro of the song feels like a calmer “coming of age” moment and later trickles into this new moment of peace. Kind of like laying in the grass with your eyes closed on a warmer day. I remember reading about how the song represents the stages of love, which reminds me of the different parts of spring like the rainfall, flowers growing and eventually the sun shining with the grass looking brighter, but then it’s over and summer comes with a new set of experiences.”

Grace Chen ’27: “Rich Girl” by Daryl Hall and John Oates
“It’s really, really good. It’s a lot more upbeat than a lot of the songs I listen to in the winter, which is why I chose it as my favorite spring song. My dad listens to this type of genre, and I feel that it reminds me of bright colors and days at the beach.”

Julia Xu ’28: “Lovesick” by Laufey
“To me, spring has a softer vibe and Laufey’s music is a combination of jazz and classical while also having her own modern style, and it just suits spring really well. I listen to Laufey’s songs in general throughout all the seasons. I love listening to her songs on runs when I’m going on with my friends or just while walking around campus. This song specifically, I associate it with spring because it just kind of has the same feeling.”
