Saturday 4/20 – Andover: 2, St. Paul’s: 3
Girls Softball (2-2) found its way to a win in the bottom of the eighth inning in their game against St. Paul’s last Wednesday. However, in another challenge against the school this past Saturday, Andover fell short.
Despite losing to St. Paul’s, Gabriella Potter ’27 noted how proud she was of the team’s performance. She described how the team worked together very well and held each other accountable.
“We played amazing, even though we didn’t win, which is completely fine. I felt like the dynamic of our team has been really good since we started, and we all performed our best, tried our best for each other, and kept each other’s heads up,” said Potter.
According to Isabelle Quito ’25, the team experienced some exciting highlights throughout the game, including two home runs, one of which was hit by Rihana Gomez ’26.
Quito said, “We did lose, but we had great moments. Rihana hit a home run, which as always, we predicted that. Also, at the very end, the energy just kept building, and we were so excited, and I think we really excelled in that part as a team.”
Ava Davey ’25 also highlighted Gomez’s home run as well as a catch made by Madison Hugo ’25. Both of these moments led to increased excitement on the field.
“Rihana Gomez hit a home run to make it three and two, which was awesome for us. One other moment that was really exciting was Mads had a great catch in the outfield that was right near the fence, and it ended the inning, which was awesome as well,” said Davey.
Potter described how the team’s communication was reassuring, with everyone actively working together to improve and achieve success.
“Our communication is getting better. We just started the season together, and I know, from a catcher’s standpoint, and my pitchers’, we’ve had a lot of communication of what we feel comfortable with doing that day and navigating ways to find a middle ground where we’re both feeling like we can do this. I also think every time we’re in a circle after an inning, we just talk about what we need to work on and what we’re doing well. It’s always just really reassuring to know that your teammates see what you can do better, and we’re all just going to work better overall,” said Potter.
According to Davey, the team worked on situational drills, including outfield plays and batting timing. She noted that the positive impact of these practice sessions on the team were visible in the game.
Davey said, “We worked a lot on kind of live situational things in practice. So, balls getting hit to the outfield, plays within the infield, and we worked a lot on hitting and our timing for hitting, so I think that really helped us in the game.”
Quito anticipated that the team will continue to focus on maintaining their spirits throughout games, regardless of the score.
“We’re going to work a lot more on anticipating the ball, but also on keeping up the energy. I know at the beginning, it was kind of eh, but at the end, we got really hype, and I think we could benefit from having that kind of hype energy full time,” said Quito.
On Saturday, Girls Softball will play Austin Preparatory School at home.
