Friday 1/12 – Andover: 7, Groton: 0
Wednesday 1/17 – Andover: 5, Tabor Academy: 2
This past Friday, Andover Boys Squash (7-0) traveled to Groton and came home with its third shutout of the season. Despite having various team members absent at Friday’s matches, Andover’s consistent support for one another, unwavering determination, and hard work have earned it the win. On Wednesday, to follow up its sweep, Andover had a tighter contest against Tabor Academy (Tabor).
Co-Captain Sean-Winston Luo ’24 talked about how the boys were able to stay focused throughout every point and how the team preserved although some teammates were away at Nationals.
Luo said, “You know I think it was just a winner’s mentality, don’t settle, we weren’t trying to drop any games obviously, and just stay locked in. Don’t take them easy… We were missing some boys, so some boys had to step up because they were playing many positions higher than they usually would.”
Avery Lin ’25 applauded Luo for executing his role as Co-Captain by being a person the team looks up to.
Lin said, “We knew we would have a lot of players missing so Sean was giving us very inspirational speeches… [Sean] is our role model, some might say even a deity. Sean is who I aspire to be, and I think that’s how we prepared.”
Lin additionally applauded Luo for his exceptional performance during his game in addition to his leadership that propelled Andover to its sweep.
Lin said, “Sean went in there with such passion and such grit. Even though he knew he was going to win, he still played each point to its end and didn’t give up points even though he could. I think that is something that we all need to learn from. I think that as more of us start to realize Sean’s greatness, we will be able to achieve more as individuals than as a team.”
Lin also showed his admiration for the team’s Head Coach John Roberts by talking about how the team’s unwavering support and care for one another makes the squash team feel like a family.
Lin said, “Everyone knows what it feels like to lose, but when one of us loses it is really remarkable how we lift each other up… The glorious JR, John Roberts, is not just a trusted adult or a good coach. He is like a friend, and when he does random stuff like buy us coffee or take us to Chick-fil-A, we really see our team as a family.”
Pragun Seth ’25 noted the team’s mentality before playing Tabor and how the team mentally and physically prepared for its matches.
