As the snow begins piling up around campus and the daylight hours start dwindling, it’s natural to experience the all-too-familiar winter season blues. Despite the weather, many Andover students find solace in music to accompany the gloomy Winter Term.
Zoe von Eckartsberg ’26: “Paul Revere” by Noah Kahan
“It’s my favorite because it makes me think of home and I feel like that’s what gets me through the winter… I love the melody of the song, it’s catchy and beautiful, but also Noah Kahan is good at songwriting and his lyrics are amazing… I think this song is unique because it captures the nostalgia and sentimentality of home and your hometown in this really special way that I feel like no other songs can.”
Migyu Kim ’25: “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” by Whitney Houston
“It’s so emotional and so deep and so rich in emotions. Even though I can’t really relate to what she’s saying about almost having it all with a certain love interest, I can relate to the emotion in her voice. It’s just a great, heartfelt song… I think that a lot of sad songs are either very heavy on the instrumentals or heavy on very low sounding boring voices, but I like how she really makes her voice and her talent stand out.”
Bailey Jean-Pierre ’26: “Gamble With My Heart” by NLE Choppa
“The chorus gets me. It makes me feel sad. I think one of the bars says, ‘Sometimes I gamble with my heart, take chances where my love at.’ It hits for real. That chorus sets up the song to give off that vibe of just being alone… I probably listen to it when it’s either really rainy outside when I just don’t feel like doing anything, when I’m tired or sore, or when I just had a bad game.”
Keegan Markgraf ’25: “Back to the Old House” by The Smiths
“I like how the guitar and the instruments come together to create this sad, droning, and lonely feel… I like the artist overall, and although the majority of their music is upbeat. They also have a sad song that I can listen to. It is nice because I can listen to The Smiths while I’m working or walking to class; it’s convenient.”
Josie O’Rourke ’24: “Goodbye in Her Eyes” by Zac Brown Band
“My favorite sad song to listen to when I have the winter blues is ‘Goodbye in her Eyes’ by Zac Brown Band because it really gets me going, it feels like I’m going to church. It’s nice and peaceful and melancholy… I like to listen to this song in the evening, after sign-in.”
