Students Reflect on Fall Break Plans

With the end of the term coming up in one week, many students are anticipating the start of  fall vacation. Students shared their plans for the 11-day-long break.

Jakob Kuelps ’25 (Hometown: Zug, Switzerland)

“I plan on going back home, catching up with friends and of course my family, spending some time with my brother, hopefully playing some golf with him as well. And just relaxing. My brother’s still at school, so I get to be at home by myself… I [also] think it’ll also be a good time for me to train because I’m a runner… I mean, mainly [break is about] unwinding and relaxing. I think Fall Term was a new adjustment. I’m an Upper now, so it’s a different academic mindset… I think I’ll take time to unwind, but also maybe practice for the SAT, which we all dread.”

Lucy Nichols ’26 (Chapel Hill, North Carolina)

“For most of [Fall Break], I’m going to go to Thanksgiving [in New Orleans to] meet with family in a different state… I want to be able to catch up as much as I can with my brother, who hasn’t spoken a word to me since I came to boarding school, and my family, who I’m really bad at staying in touch with… [Also], I would say my big hobby is that I like to crochet and knit. I would do [that] over break, if one of the things I wasn’t making right now were Christmas presents because they take a while to make. And I can’t really make Christmas presents around the people that they’re [going to] go to, so we’ll see what happens.”

Saumik Sharma ’25 (Hometown: Kathmandu, Nepal)

“I’m planning to go and stay for the entire break in Ithaca, New York with some family friends… I like to travel, so I guess going to Ithaca is somewhat of a travel, and I might also go to Niagara Falls. I’m also applying to go to Morocco on a Learning in the World trip [during Spring Term]. I’m going to work on my application [for that]… I’ve [also] been working on an essay. I don’t know where I’m going to publish it, but I’ve been trying to figure out that too. I’ve been writing something about the color red and [its] significance, and everything related to it in the Himalayan region.”

Kaya Hurteau ’27 (Hometown: Andover, Massachusetts)

“I want to try to get ahead on my work or whatever’s happening. Especially because I know I’m switching quite a few classes [next term] just [because] I have Nutcracker, and I’m doing a lot of things that I’m not going to be doing next term. So I want to try to figure out my schedule and how that’s going to work and who’s going to be my teacher, and all that stuff.”

Whitney Kanter ’24 (Hometown: San Francisco, California)

“I am planning on going home, and for at least Thanksgiving, probably spending a fair amount of time with my family. [Especially] because my brother’s here now [at Andover]… [and] my mom and my dad are empty nesters. For Thanksgiving, my family always does a little hike during the day, and then we have a big dinner with either our godparents, cousins or family friends or something like that, depends on who’s in the city. Once I take a little bit of time to relax, I’m probably going to do a little bit more college stuff. I’m hoping to just kind of reset, definitely just be a little bit more grounded in the moment, spend time with my family, catch up with my friends, and just focus on getting my battery recharged for Winter Term.”

Nisa Khairunnisa ’25 (Hometown: Jakarta, Indonesia)

“[I want] to visit some colleges with my parents during fall break, because I’m currently an Upper, so I’m preparing for my college applications… Honestly, I have a feeling that my break is not going to be a [super fun] type of break because I have the SAT coming up in December, so I’ll be studying [for the] SAT a lot… I do hope I can at least draw or finish a book… I bought a lot of economics books. I really like economics, but I haven’t really had the time to finish them. I really hope I can finish one over the break. Also [in regards to] drawing, I have not been drawing for quite a while… I really don’t think that I’d actually be able to finish an artwork, but [I hope to] at least sketch something.”
