Boys Hockey Split Games to Groton and New Hampton

Dawson Arkell ’20 received the puck off of a quick pass from Co-Captain Jack Cusack ’18, skated into the offensive end, and shot the puck right between the pads of Groton’s goalie, scoring Andover’s fourth goal of the night. Andover defeated Groton 5-2, but fell to New Hampton 8-3, shifting the team’s record to 4-2.

Cusack started the game off with an early goal during the first period, followed by goals from Kevin Ouellette ’18 and Arkell. Andover displayed a strong defensive performance allowing only two goals, working in tandem with goalkeeper Charlie Archer ’20, who earned 35 saves.

Andover suffered its second loss of the season against New Hampton. According to Arkell, Andover’s energy fell after an early goal.

Arkell wrote in an email to The Phillipian, “We scored a really easy goal on the first shift of the Friday night game, and we got complacent immediately. We thought it would be an easy game and let off the gas only three minutes into the game, and that really killed us.”

Archer said, “We came out flat. We just got lucky by the first goal.”

According to Mike Gallagher ’20 and Archer, Andover has to improve on working as a unit.

Gallagher said, “We really just need to play together as a team and not as individuals.”

Andover rebounded from its loss to New Hampton with a commanding 5-2 victory over Groton despite missing several players, according to Arkell.

Arkell said, “We really came together as a team after a tough loss on Friday and played as a unit in the absence of some key players. Our defense played well, and [Archer] held down the fort. We stayed disciplined and didn’t take dumb penalties. We saw what our team was made of, and our bond as a team helped us come out with a win.”

Saturday’s home game against Brewster was canceled due to snow.

This weekend, Andover will participate in the Flood Marr Tournament, where they will play Milton, Noble and Greenough, and Westminster.
