Joe Kruy ’12 edged out his opponent by two hundredths of a second to come out on top in the 60m scholastic hurdles in the New England Indoor Track Championships last weekend.
“I had some butterflies going into the race,” Kruy said. “I knew that one misstep could be the difference between winning and losing.”
In the last race as a part of his Andover indoor track career, it was fitting that Kruy was able to beat an Exeter opponent in such a big meet.
The invitational meet included clubs from the greater Boston area, colleges like Harvard University, Brown University and Bryant University. Exeter, the Naval Academy Prep School and the Governor’s Academy were also invited to the meet. Although the competition was not recorded with a point system, there were still some great performances from the 15 Andover athletes who competed.
Anoush Shehadeh ’15 and Marhelich Santos ’12 both had a great meet, as they posted personal records in the one mile.
James Hamilton ’12 also posted an impressive second place finish in the second heat of the mile.
In the 400 meter, Izzy Davilla ’12 continued his streak of personal records by posting a 52.8 second run. Davilla is now very close to breaking 52 seconds by the spring.
Kinsey Yost ’15 ran the 400m in 61.3 seconds and broke her personal record by four seconds.
Among the other runners who earned an invitation to this meet were Jonathan Arone ’14, Tyler Marshall ’14, Matt Fischetti ’14, Alex Esakof ’12, Michael Frasco ’12, Rhea Lewis ’13, Diana Tchadi ’14, Becca Wagman ’13, and Girls Captain Shannon Adams ’12.
Boys Captain James Lim ’12 said, “I was hoping to see some solid times that we could lay down as a standard for the team, and I would certainly say that we fulfilled that goal today.”
At the end of the season, with the boys finishing 5-2 and the girls finishing 7-0 in regular season meets, it was overall a successful winter for Andover.
Although the boys team did not meet its pre-season expectations of an undefeated record, Andover can still keep its head up, knowing that it had a very talented young group.
Wagman and Demetri Papageourgiou ’13 were elected Co-Captains for next year’s team.
Given that team will be graduating several key Seniors, it will be essential for this young core group of runners to be willing to continue to perform well and lead the team in future seasons.
