Captains Feature: Anna Fucillo ’15, Eliza Quigley ’15 and Elizabeth Kemp ’15

Boasting a combined ten years of experience on Girls Varsity Hockey, Co-Captains Eliza Quigley ’15, Anna Fucillo ’15 and Elizabeth Kemp ’15 look to cap off their Andover careers on a high note.

Head Coach Martha Fenton has high expectations for the girls as leaders this year and believes they will rise to the occasion.

“I am looking for the three captains to show this very young group of girls what being part of a team is all about – how to take care of each other [and] how to compete fiercely – but also demonstrate great sportsmanship and how to always put the team first,” said Fenton.

The Captains lead both on and off the ice. “On the ice, our captains are constantly striving to create a comfortable and fun environment for everyone on the team,” said Kelly McCarthy ’16.

After decisively defeating Winchendon 6-3 on Wednesday, Quigley’s confidence in her team runs high.

“We have some talented new players that we are hoping will step up. We hope to improve from last season,” she said.

A three-year Senior, Quigley is a high energy player with a dynamic personality, and all of her teammates look to her to bring energy to the table. She, along with Fucillo, will be attending Williams College next year to continue her journey as a hockey player. Quigley hopes to leave her mark on Andover’s hockey program.

“We are hoping to turn over a new leaf for girl’s hockey and the last few years haven’t been what we would have liked, but I think we have the pieces to do that,” said Quigley.

Ever since fifth grade, Fucillo has dreamed of putting on an Andover hockey jersey. Four years ago, she fulfilled that vision and has been a leader on the ice ever since. She believes hard work and dedication are the keys to success.

“It sounds sort of cheesy, but I think of that Gretzky quote that says, ‘The highest compliment that you can pay me is to say that I work hard every day, that I never dog it,’” said Fucillo.

Kemp is the third member of the captain trio this season, and she offers a high hockey IQ that she uses to set a positive tone for the team. Despite the youth of the team, Kemp thinks they will do great things.

“The younger girls bring great energy and lots of talent to the team, and they always keep us laughing. We know that their excitement and talent can only propel our team’s potential that much further. [Fucillo, Quigley] and I are really stressing that every game counts, and that as a unit, we are going to give one hundred and ten percent in everything we do,” said Kemp.

“All of our captains are focused, enthusiastic and talented leaders. Their undeniable presence on the ice sets the bar high in terms of work ethic and team play,” said McCarthy.

All three captains agree that handing Andover’s rival, Exeter, a crushing 4-0 loss in the final game of last season was their best memory.

“Everything that we had worked on came together, and we were able to execute and put the puck in the net,” said Fucillo of the game.

Quigley added, “It was great to go out on top in front of a big crowd.”

The team looks to do the same this season, improving upon its 5-14-3 record from last year.
